John "Jack" McFarland Bergland III, MD, age 85, of Westport, MA, formerly of Baltimore, MD and Houston, TX, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017. We had the wonderful pleasure of knowing Jack & his family for 44 years. Though the distance of many miles made our times together too infrequent, Jack was always close in heart. His persona was reminiscent of Churchill's description of FDR at their first meeting...."he is like uncorking your first bottle of champagne". This fits Jack so perfectly. We loved being around him; he made us laugh and always told great and interesting stories full of life and good humor. Jack was truly blessed with his wonderful family and many loving friends who will all miss him.

I knew Dr Bergland as my personal doctor who made our visits informally informative and relaxing. He had a great sense of humor while addressing my concerns with attention, detail and clarity.

Jack Bergland was not only my physician...he was my friend. His caring, positive, compassionate qualities touched my life during some very difficult times; and he never ceased to raise my spirits. I felt so confident and protected while in his medical care; and, it was difficult to see him leave Houston. So many happy memories of our wonderful doctor and good friend, Jack--remembering his great sense of humor--his joy of marrying Gertraude--hosting the wedding supper at our home, with Jimmy and Lou Jax and Gertrude's sister and brother as guests--his Christmas cards with pictures of the automobiles he loved to restore (with his comments that "these are my only patients now".
