John and I were friends at Friends School and then we lost track. Sounds like he was blessed with a wonderful life, family and profession. My sincere condolences. Godspeed.

Dr. Stokes was wonderful doctor. I was blessed to have one of the best doctors who really care of you. I really enjoyed how he would lighten the mood in the room with one of his jokes. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Dr. Stokes was my PCP, I was notified of his passing a day ago. This hit me hard as I had just seen him early September for an appointment and he was just fine. He was my guy, as cool as it gets and always kept it real with me. Rest peacefully Dr. Stokes, you'll be missed.

Skipper was my homeboy and Hamptonian classmate. He was also best friends with my long-time Hamptonian buddy,Errol Taylor. I always rooted for Skipper's success in obtaining his medical license. Reaching that goal was what he dreamed about most while we attended Hampton together. Sending rays of loving, healing energy to John's family.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Shockley Shepherd

My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. John E. Stokes Iv. His passing leaves a void not easily filled. I remember STOKES IV as a fun loving member of Reserve Navy SeaBee 23 @FORT McHENRY. The guys would always give him a hard time but he would remind them his ultimate goal was to become Dr. Stokes IV .
He will be missed.

Just a great guy. Always upbeat, positive, enthusiastic, with always something interesting to talk about. He made you feel special and important, every time, like he really cared how you were, what you thought. Just someone whose presence you will miss. The only treatment is to remember "not to cry because it's over, but to smile because it happened...". Well lived Skip.

Skip was my next door neighbor on Carlisle Avenue in the 60's. Our parents were great friends and we were as well at YMCA Camp Mohawk in Charles County and at our families' summer resort on the Chesapeake Bay. He was a great competitive swimmer at Northwestern HS and Hampton Institute. I will miss him immensely at our high school 50th anniversary next year.
Rest in peace good man!

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Stokes as a nurse. We worked closely together to assist subacute rehab patients successfully return to their homes. He was amazing. He was kind, intelligent and terrific with his patients and their families at the bedside. I never saw him ever in a bad mood and we worked hard but we laughed together. Dr. Stokes loved his life. He adored his wife and his children. I spoke to him a few months ago and it was WIMBLEDON Time and he was keeping up with the tournament while enjoying his wife's company on a tropical beach. He truly was a gift from God. I'm sorry for his family and friends. He is just not replaceable....
