John Taylor Obituary



John William Taylor, Jr., 86, a resident of Mayo, MD passed away peacefully on October 28, 2017 at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, MD. He was born on April 19, 1931 in Washington DC and graduated with honors from St. Anthony's High school. John was employed with the Division of Birds at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, Served in the Army in Europe as a Cartographer, Studied Art at the Corcoran School of Art, worked as an Editor/Artist with The Maryland Conservationist. Commissioned by the National Geographic Society and the National Wildlife Foundation led to his self-employment of the last several decades as a wildlife artist. He authored two books published by Johns Hopkins Press entitled, Birds of the Chesapeake and Chesapeake Spring. He designed Maryland's first deer and trout stamps and was selected as the artist for Maryland's first Waterfowl Stamp in 1974. He won the Duck Stamp contest in 1979 and was selected in 1984 as the winner of the Florida Duck Stamp contest. His life and work were documented on Maryland Public Television's, Maryland Outdoors . His later years were spent painting in his studio working primarily with oils. He is known for painting birds, landscapes and marshscapes, often with a wildlife motif. He loved everything nature, baseball, playing old-time music on his banjo and especially, birds. John loved to watch nature and wrote extensively about his experiences. His love affair with birds started in the fourth grade and never wavered. His skill as an artist led to numerous awards. His humorous charm and love for nature was always evident. He always had time to introduce someone to birds or entertain them with some banjo pickin'. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Anne Wilson and his brother, Michael Burke Taylor, Sr. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Theberge of Defuniak Springs, FL and Grace Jean Taylor of Appomattox, VA; and he had 8 nephews and nieces. Friends and family are invited to celebrate John's life on November 14 th from 1:00-3:00 at Jug Bay Wetlands Center, 1361 Wrighton Rd., Lothian, MD 20711. I met "Bud" in 1978 at a Fiddle Event at the Oxon Hill Maryland Childrens Farm . That began a lifetime friendship of playing music together with friends . Many Memories playing Tunes on Bud's porch over looking his wildlife preserve . Foxes , Deer ,
numerous Birds and one time a flock of birds sang and dance in the close trees while we were playing tunes , what a joy !
Bud the Best of Friends will be missed forever , but , my memories will live on and on . . . "the fiddler" Frank Vispo

Bud was a beloved and treasured member of the Maryland Ornithological Society and its chapter, the Anne Arundel Bird Club. On behalf of both organizations, I offer heartfelt condolences to Bud's loved ones. He gave us so much with his work, art and expertise, and while we will miss him deeply, we are grateful for his life.
