Joseph Carroll Obituary

Joseph Patrick Carroll (1933–2021)

Joseph Patrick Carroll, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 25, 2021 after, in his words, a long happy life. The son of the late Thomas and Mildred Carroll, Joe was born in Cumberland, MD on February 2, 1933. The family moved frequently in Joe's younger years, the final time from Philadelphia to the Hamilton section of Baltimore. Joe excelled at football, basketball and baseball at both LaSalle (PA) and Calvert Hall. He holds the distinction of being the only Calvert Hall athlete to be named All-State in all three sports in the same year. He continued his athletic career on scholarship at Georgetown University playing football, baseball, and as a captain of the basketball team, helped lead them to a first ever bid to the NIT. After graduating from Georgetown, Joe served in the United States Army as a cryptographer in Okinawa, Japan and was selected to play on the traveling All Star Army basketball and baseball teams. Upon completion of his service Joe returned to Baltimore and began his teaching and coaching career for multiple sports at Calvert Hall and then Gilman. He served as Director of Admissions at Gilman. Joe was also a college football official for 26 years and refereed some high-profile teams and games including the Doug Flutie Hail Mary Pass game. After earning his law degree from the University of Baltimore he was appointed Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maryland, and later President of the Maryland New Car & Truck Dealer Association for 26 years. After retiring in 1995, Joe returned to his passion coaching football and baseball at Johns Hopkins University for 11 years until he re-retired in 2007.

Joe was a loving husband to his wife of 59 years, Paula Marie (Norris) Carroll who preceded him in death and a devoted father to his five children; Mary Paula Olert, Joe Carroll, Jr. (Susan), Jane Wilson (Richard), Tim Carroll (Danielle), and Stephen Carroll, and a loving Grandfather to his 12 grandchildren; Tess Olert, Caroline Olert, Paul Olert, Hannah Carroll (Sam), Tyler Wilson, Sam Wilson, Sarah Wilson, Maddie Stuckey, Brendan Carroll, Jamie Carroll, Jack Carroll, and May Carroll.

Joe is survived by his younger brother Bill Carroll (Beth) and an older brother Thomas Owen Carroll who preceded him in death. Joe had many wonderful friends from Hamilton and Baltimore including a 74-year friendship with Bob Meehan who preceded him in death just weeks prior. Over the years Joe enjoyed running into and having lunch with former students and players as well as being a part of the regular Hamilton lunch group of former teammates and classmates. Joe was a dedicated parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church and lived a life committed to his faith, family and friends and also volunteered as a math tutor at St. Ignatius Academy in Baltimore for many years.
