Laura Emerson Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Laura Jean Emerson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who went to be with the Lord on January 30, 2025, at the age of 90. Laura was born on August 14, 1934, in Sparta, North Carolina, and spent most of her life in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Laura was a talented silk screen artist whose creativity brightened the lives of many. She had a passion for art that extended through her many years as an antique dealer, connecting cherished memories to those who appreciated the beauty of yesteryear. Beyond her artistic endeavors, she raised AKC German Shepherds, sharing her love for these majestic animals with her family and friends. A lifelong member of the Darlington United Methodist Church, Laura held many leadership roles there and dedicated over ten years to enriching the lives of young people by leading the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years. Her commitment to giving back did not stop there; Laura was an active member of the Evergreen Garden Club and the Soroptimist Club, always eager to lend her hands and heart to her community. Laura was a nurturing presence in both her immediate and extended family. She is survived by her daughters, Belinda Jeanette Emerson Karas (John Steve Karas) and Jane Rayshell Emerson Bowers (Gerald Miles Bowers); her grandchildren, Bethany Anne Karas (Benjamin Levy), Aimee Noelle Karas Preddy (Donovan), Andrew Garrett Karas (Jenn), and G. Miles Bowers, Jr. (Mattie); her great-grandchildren, Calvin James Karas and Niko Graham Preddy; and her dear sister, Carol Mays. Her warmth and compassion touched countless lives, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. In addition to her artistic talents and community service, Laura was an avid gardener, fervent reader, and passionate cook. She lovingly maintained "Laura's Little Library" in her front yard, sharing her love of literature with anyone who wanted to help themselves to books. She loved all animals and was known for taking in strays throughout her life, the most recent being two cats, her constant lap companion "Sadie", and a three-legged outdoor cat "Hawkins". She was an especially avid bird lover and enjoyed bird watching even in her final days. Laura cherished time at her beach home, affectionately named The Sea Plunger, where she made lasting memories that her family and friends will treasure. She introduced all who knew her well to the family board game "Aggravation" at which she excelled. She made sure that each of her children and grandchildren were given handmade wooden game boards to carry on the tradition in their families. A public visitation for Laura was held on February 2, 2025, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM, providing an opportunity for friends and family to gather in remembrance of her remarkable life. A funeral service celebrating Laura's life and legacy took place on February 3, 2025, at 11:30 AM at the Darlington United Methodist Church, 2117 Shuresville Road, Darlington, MD, where she devoted herself to her faith and community. As we say goodbye to a vibrant and loving soul, we invite all who knew Laura to honor her memory by continuing to share love, creativity, and kindness in their own lives. Her spirit will forever remain a guiding light to those fortunate enough to have known her. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, James Emerson, Jr., father, Dency Richardson, mother, Zollie Richardson, sisters Clyde Mabe and Mildred Hime, and brother Amos Richardson. Contributions may be made in her memory to Darlington United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.zellmanfuneralhome.com.
