Mark was an exceptional young man who truly loved swimming and coaching children. His smile and shining personality will be missed by so many kids and families. I hope he knew how much the CA swimmers adored him.

My son, Krishan, was a 1st grader at Pointers' Run in 2009. It was a tough year for him and our family. But Mark was always kind to Krishan and our family. I often volunteered during lunch and recess and had the privilege of working and joking around with Mark. I will always remember his smile.

To Mark's family,
Our Boy Scout Troop from Maryland has had the benefit of Mark's warm and personable guidance and leadership for many summers at Camp Bashore. His loving spirit and knowledgeable aquatic instruction was enjoyed by both our scouts and adult leaders. He enriched the lives of hundreds if not thousands of scouts.
Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

Mark was a one of my coaches growing up on the Columbia Clippers. He was as much as a friend as he was a coach and his personability and friendliness made him an even better coach. When I had my Eagle Scout Court of Honor in December of 2009, coach Mark came out to support me. As a coach he was very fun to be around, but also consistantly pushed us to be better athletes, and our best selves. I remember having friendly competitions with him during dryland to see who could hold longer planks. He personally helped push ourselves to train harder than we thought we could and showed us we were capable of pushing limits and boundaries. Mark was a positive influence, a good friend, and a really great swim coach. I will always remember him in this way. His contributions to this Earth will live on forever through the memory of all those he influenced and his legacy and impact can never be taken away. My deepest and most sincere condolences to the Mazzarella family; my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Coach Mark was one of the best coaches I have ever had in any sport. I wasn't much of a swimmer, but somehow coach Mark convinced me to swim year round with the Columbia Clippers in middle school.
We would talk about football, and joke around with each other. I had really long hair, and we made a bet on the Eagles v. Ravens game. If the Eagles lost he owed me a pizza, and if I lost I had to get a buzz cut. Low and behold the Ravens lost, but coach Mark let me chicken out and keep my ridiculous hair-do. I also remember that on my birthday he came over to my house and played Madden with me. These are memories that I will never forget. He always went above and beyond. My heart goes out to the Mazzarella family.

I first met Mark when he was 9 or 10 at the Huntington pool where he was one of my favorite pool rats. Years later, I had the pleasure of working with Mark through the Clippers and CNSL. He always had a kind and encouraging word for his swimmers and colleagues. Mark's energy and enthusiasm for the sport of swimming was contagious as was his kindness. He touched so many lives. My condolences to the Mazzarella family.

I remember Mark as a 4yo on the Huntington Dolphins Swim Team. He always had a smile on his face. One of my fondest memories of Mark is when I coached him as a 6 y.o. He always used the breaststroke kick for all the strokes. I finally put fins on him so he could not breaststroke kick, but he still tried (I am smiling at that memory). Later in life, as a coach, he would always make sure to find me on the pool deck where we would give each other a hug. I enjoyed seeing him when he was running either in the morning or evening in our neighborhood. He was a special man and he will be missed by many people his life touched -- his swimmers, his Boy Scouts, his friends, his co-workers, and especially his family.

To the family of Mark,
I would like to express my deepest sympathy to you. He was a great man. when I heard about the passing of Cheese, I was surprised and just started thinking about the time I had with Cheese. Compared to you, I have only had 3 weeks with him. My Boy Scout troop has been going to Camp Bashore for 4 years. I joined just before the 2nd year my troop went. Cheese, arguably, was the best staff member at Camp Bashore. He followed one point point of the Scout law that everyone noticed: Cheerful. No matter what happened, he was always cheerful. I always knew him as the Aquatics Director. Last year, there was a big storm during Week 2 of Bashore. That was when my troop went that year. I, along with a couple of friends, went on Outpost. The storm was there in the middle of the night. The next morning, the power was out all across camp. No matter what, he followed another point of the Scout law. Helpful. At the time, he was not the Program Director. But no matter what, he helped. He helped throughout camp the whole day. The power came back during dinner. Everyone was cheering. My point here was that he was a great man. You have my condolences.
