Paul McClelland Obituary

Paul Archer McClelland, a respected Baltimore physician and mentor in emergency medicine and psychiatry, passed away peacefully at home. He was 76.

Born June 2, 1948, in Mt. Upton, New York, Paul grew up in a small-town setting that nurtured his empathy and insight. The son of an artist and an engineer, he was shaped by both creativity and logic. In high school, he was valedictorian, captain of the football and basketball teams, and met his lifelong partner, Peg Sutton, whom he married in 1971.

He earned a B.S. in Physics from Syracuse University in 1969 and pursued graduate studies at Johns Hopkins. He taught high school physics before attending the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree with a specialization in psychiatry in 1977. His medical career spanned 36 years, leaving a lasting impact on Baltimore.

Paul served as Chief of Psychiatry at several area hospitals, including St. Agnes, where he also held the position of Chief of Staff. He was President of the Maryland Psychiatric Society, Medical Director of the Physician's Health Program, a board member for Healthcare for the Homeless, and a member of St. Agnes's Helping Hands Society. He was honored with multiple awards for leadership, teaching, and service.

A lifelong learner, Paul had wide-ranging interests in science, art, music, travel, and sports. He was known for his kindness, insight, and ability to truly listen-qualities that made him a cherished colleague and friend. His handwritten letters to family are remembered as deeply loving gestures.

In retirement, he enjoyed museum visits, genealogy projects with his grandson Luke, and cheering on the Orioles, Ravens, and Luke's teams. He and Peg traveled widely and welcomed friends and family into their home with warmth and generosity.

He is survived by his wife, Peg; sons Brian (Tara Rothbauer-McClelland) and Kevin (Melissa Brannon-McClelland); and his grandson, Luke.

He will be deeply missed.

The McClelland family will receive visitors at Candle Light Funeral Home, Saturday, June 7, 2025 from 3:00 pm-5:00 pm; a celebration of life will follow at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Healthcare for the Homeless (Baltimore, MD) or Scouting America – Minsi Trails Council (Allentown, PA).
