Remembering the Judge. Lee Raskin, JD. Lancers Boys Club 1959-1963....City College Class of June '63.

It was a beautiful sunny day in 1970.I was 16 years old and there I sat surrounded by so many people I didn't know who were equally as excited as I was.The place was Memorial Stadium and it was Game 2 of the 1970 World Series between two of the greatest baseball teams of all time-Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds. The reason I was at that game and had that "Once in a Lifetime " experience was because of Bob Hammerman. To this day I don't know how Bob got me that ticket but I can truly say that it was wonderful to be counted as one of "Bob's Boys"(Lancers).
Thank God Bob was there in my life as a role model, friend, advisor, discplinarian and at times, basketball coach.
The amount of good this man did for the City of Baltimore is beyond measure. He can easily stand with Enoch Pratt,Johns Hopkins, and John Carroll as one of our greatest citizens.
Bob has been loved and appreciated for many many years. His record of service and caring for the community will live on.
My love and prayers and tears are with all of his family and friends.

It was an honor to know the Judge. I am grateful for the support that he gave City College during my tenure as principal.

I joined the Lancers Boys Club as a high school sophomore in 1966, one of thousands of young men, and later women, who was privileged to have been mentored by this extraordinary man. Bob constantly reminded us that "to those whom much has been given, much is expected". I trace my career in public service directly to Bob's influence. Bob was a friend and teacher who will be missed dearly. May you be free from suffering and may you find the peace you so richly deserve.

As one of the founding members of the Lancers the second time around, which was formed around 1957 after Bob was practicing law in Baltimore, I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. He provided us, as impressionable teenagers, with much guidance on issues that were relevant to the times. Although I had no contact with him after graduating high school in 1962 and moving to Israel in 1972, the memories of those informative years between the ages of 13-18 are still very fresh in my mind.

We were very saddened to receive the news about the man we knew as "Judge Hammerman". We will miss him. Alain performed numerous times for the Lancers Club. We will always remember the club and Roberts devotion to it and the other causes he held dear. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Judge Hammerman had a huge impact on all boys lucky enough to have participated in the Lancers Boys Club. During the 1960s and 1970s, when the Lancers met each Friday night at Cross Country School, Bob would guide his boys through discussions and guest speakers --- providing us with numerous educational, and sports related opportunities. His sense and insistence upon true sportsmanship, integrity, respect towards others and doing the little things "the right way" was noted and relied upon as each of us matured and entered adulthood.
Rest in peace Bob -- your memory and the lessons you taught all us will never be forgotten.

My brother Mark (Lancers '67) and I (Lancers '65) benefited enormously from the Lancers Club and from Bob. Trips to New York, Canada, and Europe that Bob meticulously organized expanded our horizons, and the weekly speakers, concerts, and other cultural events exposed us to extraordinary people whose example was inspiring. In the end, however, it was the example of Bob's life of service to others, his idealism, and his strong moral compass that remains the most inspiring lesson. Though he and I saw each other only once a year, during his summer vacations to New England, he was a major presence in my life and will be still. I hope his family will find solace in the enormous good that Bob did and in the love that we who were lucky enough to have such a mentor and friend will always feel for Bob.

Eventhough we are thousands of miles away our hearts are with you as we sit here on our porch in Jerusalem. We know how heartbroken you are to lose your beloved brother who you were so devoted to as he was to you.
. We wish we could be closer to you in your hour of need.

As a veteran radio news journalist in Baltimore,I had come to know and interview Judge Hammerman as a distinguished gentleman, jurist and human being. My father, the late City Councilman Dr. Emerson Julian was also a friend of his and spoke nothing but praises of his work on the bench and in the community. He touched the lives of several other members of my family as well. It is with deep sorrow that I send my personal condolences to the Hammerman family in light of your tragic loss. The world will never be the same but it's up to each one of us to keep his memory alive. Peace and blessings to all.

Although I'd met Judge Hammerman only briefly after High Holidays services at Har Sinai, he impressed me as a man who was deeply dedicated to whatever he chose to undertake. My children and I always looked forward to hearing his majestic, powerful and precise Tekiah Gedolah on Rosh Hashanah. When we couldn't attend services this year in Baltimore, and instead heard a different shofarist at our home congregation, my 6 year old noted "He can't blow the shofar like the man in Baltimore!" Our family extends our deepest sympathies on your loss.

Judge Hammerman was on the bench the only time I ever sat on a jury. He was patient, gave us clear instructions, answered our notes while we were deliberating. He is a fine example that other Circuit Court judges should follow.
May he rest in peace

Caroline--it has been more than half a cebtury since we've seen each other since I left Baltimore and headed north. Fortunately I had lunch twice with Bob twice in the last decade, and it was just like returning to a beloved friendship, my most important remaining in Baltimore. I wish I could be there to comfort you in your loss. My best wishes to you all.

I am ever disheartened and sad to hear of the passing of Judge Hammerman. As a pre-law student and future Maryland judge, I can only hope to be as great as this honorable man was one day. My heart goes out to his family and friends. May God be with you always and forever.

To the family and friends of the Judge: Having been the Manager of the Condo where he lived I was priviledged to make the acquaintance of the Judge as he had requested various things to be done to make his move-in easier and where after several of these requests were satisfied we talked at length. It was indeed a pleasure.

Dear Caroline and Family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Bobby's passing. Many people called him Judge, but he was always Bobby to my family and me.
The Hammerman family was like my second family as I was growing up and I always have fond thoughts of all of you. Know that in this time of sadness, you are in my thoughts.

What can one say? Judge Hammerman was a unique person. As much as it pains me to see him pass on I take comfort in how much of an honor it was to be a Lancer under him. I learned more from Judge Hammerman and the opportunities he provided me than any textbook or class in high school and beyond. He will be missed greatly but the principles he taught me and countless others will not be lost.

The passing of Judge Hammerman again brings to mind some of the great times at the City Circuit Court. As Juvenile Judge and later as the Chief Judge, Judge Hammerman always brought dignity and respect to the justice system. Never was there a man more compassionate, caring or generous than Judge Hammerman on the bench and off. A true gentleman. His love of sports, his friendship with people from the late Charley Eckman to former Oriole pitcher Jaime Moyer showed a different side of the Judge. He surrounded himself with real friends and those who spoke and gave from the heart. Sincerity was his style, a gentleman is what he was. The community and those who knew him have suffered a great loss in his passing.

The Judge and Lancers helped shape my son's sense of self and his commitment to causes beyond the small world of the adolescent. I often hear compliments about my son and his sense of worldly issues, and I attribute this to the exposure the Judge provided for him. Judge Hammerman was an admirable mentor in so many ways, and we are blessed to have known him.

Bob Hammerman - "the Judge" as he was known by many - made a huge impact on my family. Over 30 years ago two of my older brothers were Lancers which is how we first met Bob. Bob deeply broadened the lives of my brothers, and the lives of every Lancers member by introducing them to doing good deeds for the less fortunate,to becoming aware of politics and current events, and to enjoying life through sports and cultural events. For the past 2 years, my oldest son has had the privilege of being a member of the Lancers, and he too became very close to Bob, and looked up to him as a mentor.
Bob Hammerman was a true intellect, athlete, and humanitarian. What a huge loss for our community.
