ROBERT MOXLEY Obituary

The passing of a proper gentleman, fighter pilot, sportsman, beloved father, brother and grandfather, he will be sorely missed. After an extended illness and due to complications from a stroke on January 29, 2014, Robert Richarts Moxley expired at 2:38 p.m. on Thursday February 6, 2014 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Born on September 24 th 1928 in his family's home in Ellicott City, Maryland; Robert was the son of the late Evelyn R. (Richarts) Moxley and Norman E. Moxley; husband to the late Wilma Jean "Jean" (de Roulhac) Moxley; ; father to Karen Lynn Moxley and David Wayne Moxley; grandfather to Anna Jean Moxley and Liliana Richarts Moxley; brother to Marilyn M. Embry, Eleanor M. Breeden and the late Norman E. Moxley, Jr. Robert attended primary school in Ellicott City and high school at McDonogh School where he was on both the varsity and junior varsity baseball and basketball teams. He continued his education by attending Towson State College, Johns Hopkins University, and Lafayette College where he played baseball for their respective teams. As the Korean War broke out in 1950, Robert abandoned his college pursuits and forwent a contract to play professional baseball with the St Louis Browns to join the newly created US Air Force. While he was still a cadet stationed at Williams Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona, Robert met Jean, the love of his life and constant companion of 51 years. Robert flew 100 combat missions in Korea and was awarded the Korean Air Medal, Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Robert left the Air force in 1953. For a short time worked with his father Norman on Norman's inventions. His pursuits soon turned to home improvement, real estate brokerage, and real estate development. Robert and members of his family developed the Normandy Shopping Center, the first modern retail center in Howard County, Maryland. He was the principal broker for the assemblage of 14,000 acres of land that is now known as Columbia, Maryland. Robert's passion for the outdoors started early in life as a boy scout. Much of his free time was spent with Jean at their vacation home in the North Maine Woods. Robert's last trip to Maine was in May 2013. One of the highlights of Robert's life occurred in 2007 when he was invited to accompany Lt. General Charles Cleveland, Maj. Gen. Carl Schneider, Col. Ralf Gibbson,Col. Pete Carpender, Col. Ken Shealys, Col. Buss Aldrin, and Col. Harold Fisher to Korea as an ambassador of peace commemorating the 60 th anniversary of the US air force. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Moxley through his son, my friend and classmate from the University of Denver David. They welcomed me into their family on several occasions both in Maryland and up in their cabin in Maine. Mr. Moxley and I shared the love of the F-86 Sabre jet, we were both members of the F-86 Sabre Pilots Association. He even let my borrow his brown leather pilots jacket and some gun camera film he acquired while in Korea. We both knew General Charles Chick Cleveland although I didn't realize at the time that I was in the presence of greatness. His and Jean's humble kindness and generosity were always very, very special to me. I will always thank God for the blessing of meeting Dave and his parents. For Robert, Jean, and all the rest of the sabre pilots that have flown into the west, God speed, safe home, and eternal blue skies and a strong tailwind. I hope to see Dave and express my condolences in person.

In a short period of time, I came to love Bob Moxley. I sensed in him a deep love of country, a devotion to the democratic, entrepreneurial way of life, a reverence for his deceased wife, a generosity that knew no bounds, and a toughness and self-effacing manner that endeared him to us professional military men. This country has lost a great American.
