I got to know Sam playing tennis at the Mellon Bubble. I loved playing with him and our conversations afterwards. I was doing a film about transplant surgeon Dr. Tom Starzl who was his own amazing character and Sam had great stories to tell. I also had a medical issue which he helped talk me through-- and I learn how nice it was to have a briliant pathologist as a friend. Sam also talked lovingly about his kids and I hope they are doing okay. As Fred Rogers used to say, you never get over people you love who you lose, they just forever become part of who you are. I'm sure Sam is part of the many he touched.

Sam Yousem was a wonderful colleague. He was always available for a chat in the hallway or for a conversation in his office. Sam greeted everyone with a broad smile however busy he was, and if somehow you missed seeing him while at a lecture in the department or in the hallways, he was sure to call out and greet you. Sam took pride in introducing new members of the staff in his area, bringing them around to the clinical laboratories so that they felt comfortable engaging colleagues in other specialties as the need arose for completing a diagnosis. Sam exemplified the best in a professional colleague and as a highly accomplished pathologist.
I express my deepest condolences and sympathies to his family.
