Steven lived behind me for most of my growing up years. We waited every morning at the bus together. He picked on me like a brother. He and his sister Sally were very close. We trick or treated together every year. We played pranks on people. It was good memories except the time we were about eleven and he threw a stick and it hit me in the mouth killing my tooth. Funny everytime i see my discolored tooth I would think of him. So I am not surprised he taught sports great arm! You will be missed. I have fond growing up memories of you.

Wanted to express how much Steve meant to me as a coach, mentor, and friend. He was such a positive influence on me as as an athelete and a person. I think of Steve often and find that no matter what memory I am going over, I always seem to end my thoughts with a smile on my face. Steve had such a profound impact on me as a wrestler and a man. He helped so many people throughout his time at GDS and beyond. He will be greatly missed.

I am a current student at Calvert School where Mr. Broy taught, and I played lacrosse, and football for him. Also he was my 7th grade advisor. Mr. Broy motivated me to achieve more than I ever thought I could've. My favorite memory was when he drove me home from school due to the fact that my dad was away and my mom couldn't get me untill six o'clock. He was a great man that helped me become stronger and who I am today. The best thing about Mr. Broy was he was always giving towards others and thought about them first. Mr. Broy was my favorite teacher and I know for a fact he is resting happily in a better place.

I went all through school with Steve,I also had the pleasure of working with him for a breif period at Rite Aid in Jacksonville. My memories of him are all humerous, fun, and happy. I dont have to tell anyone what a good person he was, or how much he will be missed. My heart goes out to his family, I cant even imagine the greif you are going through. We are all blessed to have had him in our lives!!

Beyond touching a lot of lives through his coaching and teaching, Steve clearly had a strong sense of family.
At the viewing it was hard not to notice that while the circumstances were and are terrible, the general sound of the folks there was warm chuckling. I think that this really reflected an element of Steve that I had sort of forgotten in the decade since wrestling for him -- that he was just kind of a blast to be around, and a real good-time guy.
The real lessons I learned from Steve were in gutting it out and really giving your best, no matter what, but I think the context really underscored for me that he was able to teach those lessons by keeping things fun -- by sneaking up on you and wrestling you to the ground, by basically making you feel like a wuss if you couldn't carry your partner a hundred yards, or by just staring at you and then grinning a little to let you know you'd asked a stupid question and were really just trying to get out of one more rep or round.
I feel that the coaching of young athletes in an individual sport like wrestling lends itself to a special sort of impact on those athletes; I also think Steve was an especially fun guy with terrific focus. And I know I was really fortunate to learn the benefits of athletics and and both individual and team effort from as fun-loving a guy as Steve.

My best friend was friends with Steve. He moved to CA about a year ago. When he heard about the death of Steve, he spoke about long ago memories they shared in Jacksonville as teenagers. My best friend, Sean Peet died January 29th, 2011 from a heart attack. He had planned on moving back to Baltimore next month with his son Aiden. We were all so excited. Now we are all grieving. Sean had said how he felt bad that last year when Steve called him to "hang out" he never followed through. I'd like to think they can now visit once again in Heaven. Sean was the same age as Steve. RIP both of you.

Dear Broy family,
I am a 7th grade student at Calvert School. Mr. Broy was always joking around and coming up with new games for gym. Just Monday during Study Hall, he started a rubber-band war with all of the students in the classroom. He will most definetely be remembered and missed at Calvert.

Laura,
I'm deeply sorry for your and the girls' loss. What a loss to all of us who knew Steve. Steve was one of those rare characters full of energy and good humor. So many words pop into my head thinking of Steve...leader, athlete, friend...a great friend who was always there if you needed him. You and the family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Steve Broy opened the door to athletics to so many kids and opened his heart to many more. Mira and Camryn, you can be proud of your wonderful father--we are all proud to have been associated with him. Laura, our family grieves with you and prays that these sentiments and stories you receive are a balm to your soul. God bless you and the girls.

Dear Laura, Steve was so blessed to have found you, and you were so blessed to have found him. I can still picture the two of you at your wedding - so happy and in love. You were always so good to each other and so good for each other. All of those people who crowded into the funeral were there because of the love that you and Steve showed everyone who was a part of your lives. We are so sorry for your loss. We love you and hope to see you again soon. Love, Aunt Julia and family

Dear Laura,
I remember very clearly how much warmth and caring you brought to us anytime you came for a match or practice. I remember you standing outside of the locker rooms talking and welcoming all of us. I know for Steve to have given as much love and caring as is he did to us, your absolute support was necessary and ongoing.
I’ve been thinking about when I was a 90 lb freshman just barely over 5 feet tall, terrified of even showing up at my new high school. Steve visited my gym class just to see me go up the climbing wall and tell me when I came down how strong I was and that I should join the wrestling team. I also remember being a head strong senior with so many wins to my record that it went to my head and Steve teasing me and calling me “Prima Donna” to bring me down to earth. Steve was a true friend, he always told me what I needed to hear whether I liked it or not and because of his warmth his message always hit home.
One distinct memory I have is of visiting Steve at his office at GDS a couple of years after I graduated. People always gravitated toward Steve’s office because, well, Steve was there and there was one girl there at that time who was probably a sophomore, I don’t think she was on any of Steve’s teams, maybe she was in one of his classes. Steve was joking with her and stood up and sort of pushed her out of the way in a playful way. There was something about their interaction in which I could sense that Steve’s positive attention built her up in a way that she might not have gotten from anywhere else.
I think that’s what Steve did for all of us who were on his teams or in his classes; he saw something in each of us that was special even when we didn’t see it in ourselves. I certainly didn’t see myself as much of anything at the beginning of my freshmen year until Steve told me that he did. Steve helped me think of myself in an entirely different way that has and will continue to enrich my life. Talking with my former teammates and classmates at the funeral last night and also reading their messages on the computer I felt I was with Steve in a very real way. It was the smiles, the confidence, the deep warmth, the sincere respect I noticed everyone paid to each other while at the same time being playful and without pretenses. Steve affected us deeply with all of those things and I know for myself and would venture to guess for the others that all of us have passed some of these things on to other people in our lives. We are all there for you in any way we can be. If you or your children would ever like to see Steve through us or maybe just hear some good stories about him that we might know we are available anytime in the years ahead.
Your wonderful caring nature is what brought Steve to you and I know you and your children will have all of the love and support that you need even without Steve here with us.
My deepest love and caring,
Jon

It is hard to put into words the gravity of this loss to his family, his community, and this world. Steve was a great teacher, mentor, and friend. He took so many young men (and women) under his wings as wrestling coach at GDS and built a family of his team. The young people blessed with his gifts, including my son, have grown into solid people, thanks in no small part to him. Our prayers are with the Broy family with hopes for peace in knowing that Steve lives on in the countless lives he made better during the too short time he was with us. He will be forever missed. To Steve's Family and Friends:
As a first year teacher at Calvert School I have only known Steve since August, but I can say to his credit that he was the kind of person that after meeting him you felt like you've known and loved him all along. Unassuming, sincere, kind and friendly, there was no "getting to know" Steve; instead it was just instant admiration and joy. I will always remember how he carried himself here at Calvert, his service to this school, and the deep affection that our students had for him. These are sad and difficult days for us. Please know that he was respected and admired by us all, and I am certain that the Calvert community will be happy to help out in any way we can.
May Steve know the peace and joy that the Father has prepared for us, and may his family, friends and students be consoled and made better by the example he gave us during his short life.
