Stephen Green Obituary

Stephen M. Green died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends. Steve was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard and Elizabeth Green, the youngest of four boys. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert.

Steve attended the Gilman School in Baltimore and Yale University. He resided in New Haven, CT until he moved to Washington DC to join the administration of Mayor Anthony Williams in 2000 (where he played a major role in the Montreal Expos move to Washington and the development of Nationals Park). At the end of the Williams' administration, he was SVP, Acquisitions, for the William C. Smith Co. and thereafter Director of Capital Programs for the District of Columbia Housing Authority. In 2014, he joined the NHP Foundation as Chief Operating Officer; at his death, he was EVP and Chief Investment Officer at NHP Foundation. Virtually his entire professional career was dedicated to the development of affordable housing.

Steve is survived by his brothers, Rick (Trish) and Chris (Leslie); children, Todd (Rosalee) and Tara; his children's mother, Jill Comstock; grandchildren Todd, Camren, Tafsir, Sophia, Jazmine and Syan, great-grandson, Chance; his partner, Debra Yogodzinski and innumerable, much beloved, nieces, nephews and friends.

He loved dogs, boats, travel, beach vacations, red wine, theater and all sports, and was affectionately known to many as "The Admiral".

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ASPCA, the Capital Area Food Bank, or a charity of your choice.

A private family service will be held at Gawler's Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled on a date to be determined. Please follow Steve's page on Gawler's website for details on the future Celebration of Life.

Thank you Steve for your leadership, mentorship and authenticity. Never met anyone quite like you and really enjoyed our time working together. Like the rest of your DMPED colleagues we will press forward on our critical housing and City building missions, hoping to bring along as many new recruits as you did. i have known and worked with Steve for over 20 years. Steve will always be remembered for his perfect combination of passion and intellect. He had a limitless capacity to combine facts, vision, and hope to realize what others couldn't naturally see. He expected the most from all he worked with, and everything we did together was better because of his insights...and the world is better because of Steve Green! i will miss him.

I met Steve in DC and worked with him on the redevelopment of the Northwest One community. Most recently we worked on redeveloping Park Heights in Baltimore. He was so great in matching the technical skills necessary along with the political will to get it done right. I really enjoyed working with him and he is missed. But, his vision for the community will continue.
