Thomas Maffeo Obituary

Thomas Edwin Maffeo passed peacefully into heaven on April 5th, at the age of 92.

He was born September 4th, 1931, in New Haven, CT to Benjamin and Loretta (Ferguson) Maffeo. He graduated from West Haven High School where he was Class President his senior year, and was an exceptional athlete excelling in Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball. He received athletic and ROTC scholarships to the University of Connecticut, played point guard on their basketball team, and 3rd base for their baseball team, and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity all while tackling rigorous studies for a B.S in Industrial Engineering,1954. After graduation he played with the New Haven Sailors and Birmingham Barons minor league baseball clubs.

Tom was then drafted as an Army Lt. and Special Attache to a Commanding General at the Pentagon. It was at a Pentagon gathering where he met Marvis June Meador who would become his wife, they were married in 1956 at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Alexandria, VA. They soon left Washington D.C. when he became an engineer with the Alcoa corporation in Massena, NY. As part of Alcoa's manager trainee program, he received an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Clarkson University in 1961.

His career then took him across the country while climbing the corporate ladder: Dart Industries and Rexall Drug Company in Los Angeles and St. Louis. Vanda Cosmetics in Detroit, Heil Process Equipment in Cleveland, and finally Constar International (Sewell Plastics) in Havre de Grace, MD. His combined social and business skills were second to none, as he rose through the corporate ranks to become Vice President or President at each of these companies.

Tom is predeceased by his parents, two brothers and by his wife Marvis (2019) who he was proudly married to for 63 years. He is survived by three daughters, Kathleen (Thomas) Tillman, Michelle (Bill) Fehrmann, Caroline (Brian) Alexander; six grandchildren; Bill Fehrmann III, Chandler (George) Winn, Brenna Tillman, Misha Fehrmann, Kitty Alexander, Phoebe Alexander, and great granddaughter Taytum Kimbro.

Tom was a guiding light in the lives of his children. Incredibly intelligent, witty, and focused with physical and mental stamina that will remain unduplicated. His grandchildren, especially, were the recipients of his perceptive wisdom, career guidance, and unabashed praise. He traveled the world and was so well read he could have a conversation with anyone. He loved "coincidences" when meeting people from all walks of life whom he seemingly could always uncover that they shared something in common.

Devoted to his family, he was also devoted to golf, which of course he excelled. So many of his lifelong friendships were formed on a golf course. He loved vacationing in Hilton Head, SC and Naples, FL and played courses all over the US and Europe. Sports competition of any type made him "tick," famous for giving you the recap of any sporting event of note and could recount every stroke of a round of golf played 20 or 30 years prior. Watching baseball with Tom was a real treat as he usually called every pitch before it left the pitcher's hand.

Tom was active in many community activities serving on Harford Community College's Board of Directors, keeping memberships in The Knights of Columbus, The Elks Lodge, and was a Mentor for SCORE. He and Marvis were also longtime members of the Maryland Golf and Country Club.

There will be a visitation on Sunday April 14th at Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air, Inc. 610 W. MacPhail Road Bel Air, MD 21014 from 3-5 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 10:00 a.m. on Monday April 15th, with a luncheon to follow.
