Blake Putt Obituary

Blake Evans Putt Battle Creek Blake Evans Putt, 57, of Battle Creek and Charlevoix, died unexpectedly at University of Michigan Hospital on Thursday, December 17, 2009. He was born September 10, 1952, in Battle Creek to Richard Evans and Patricia Sherwood (Brigstock) Putt. He attended St. Philip Catholic Schools, was a 1970 Lakeview High School graduate and attended Kellogg Community College. Blake retired as a Maintenance Supervisor from the Battle Creek Department of Public Works Wastewater Division. After retiring, he resided in Charlevoix. Blake married Deborah Kay Pratt December 12, 1981 in Battle Creek. Surviving are Deborah, his wife of 28 years; their daughter, Layne Sherwood Putt, and their son, Evan Richard Putt, both of Battle Creek; granddaughter, Abigail Sherwood Putt; sisters, Mary Carvel "Khi" Palmer of Battle Creek and Sherwood Anne (Richard) Mitter of Charlevoix; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws; and locally by a sister-in-law, Julia (Jeff) Buckham of Kalamazoo. Blake loved coaching his son's hockey teams and was the manager and assistant coach of the Battle Creek Bullets that "went to the Joe". He enjoyed snow skiing, fishing, hunting, golfing, the outdoors and music. Blake spent many memorable hours with family and friends on East Twin Lake in Charlevoix. Most recently, his love and attention was focused on his eight-month-old granddaughter, Abigail. Blake took a leadership role, touching and influencing many lives, as a parent, a mentor, coach and at work. Blake was also a member of the F & U Club, which brought him much joy. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where memorial services to celebrate Blake's life will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2009. For Debbie, Layne and Evan, I am sadened by the thought that I will not be able to reconnect with Blake when I return with my husband to live in the lower 48. All my memories of Blake are happy ones of us growing up as young adults some 30 years ago. These memories erase the sadness and restore Blake to the living world. I hope you and the rest of his family can draw comfort from your memories of the large life Blake lived. Later Gator, Rest in Peace!

Deb, Layne and Evan... I was so saddened to hear of Blakes passing, but was so glad that he and I got together this summer while i was working up north. We had a great time talking about our days of coaching hockey together, and all the great kids, now young men that we coached. Blake was a kind man, and I feel priveleged to have known him. Take care and know that his spirit lives on on the other side of the veil, and you may see him again someday! Love you all, Bill Knopp

One of the lucky ones - as a childhood cousin from Virginia and then California - in the early years we would play, swim, shoot, ride horses, have Christmases at Grandma's house, then also met again recently, this time with his lovely family. Blake had it all and gave his all; his memory lives with me. For his family I wish peace, ease, love, and hope in this Season and in years to come.
