Mabel Grant Obituary

Mabel Beatrice Ridley Griffin Grant

Mabel Beatrice Ridley Griffin Grant, 101 went to meet her blessed savior at home with her devoted son Duane C. Griffin by her side, December 6, 2020 in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Mabel was born January 9, 1919 in Wayside, Georgia to the late Mr. Edward Ridley and Mrs. Florence (Billingslea) Ridley. Moving from wayside, Georgia to Detroit, Michigan; she later moved to Albion, Michigan where she attended Albion Public Schools.

Accepting Christ at the age of 12, she was an active member of Lewis Chapel A.M.E. Church of Albion, Michigan.

Mabel had five sisters, Odessa Ridley (Joseph) Snyder, Elizabeth Ridley (Thomas) Foster, Betty Ridley (Jeff), Simmons, Eula Ridley (James) Freeman, Etta Ridley (Hosie) Hall; and three brothers: Marion (Gladys) Ridley, Henry Ridley, Benjamin (Priscilla) Ridley all deceased.

As an Active member of Adah Chapter of #36 Order of the Eastern Star: Mabel served as a past Worthy Matron.

In 1936, Keith (deceased) and Mabel were married. From this union, they had two sons: Duane (Selena) Griffin and Kenneth (Linda) Griffin (both deceased) and a daughter Phyliss Elaine (deceased) Griffin.

Mother, mom, grandma, auntie was active in the life of others as a Christian, Boy Scout Den Leader and a loving mentor to both children and adults.

After the death of her husband Keith Griffin, she became owner of Griffin Superb Cleaning Service from 1959 to 1979. She later sold the business to her son Duane Griffin in 1979. The business, a building maintenance service was in operation for 62 years. This historically was one of the first black owned businesses in the area since 1954.

In 1971, the union of matrimony to Alonzo (deceased) Grant brought Mabel the gift an instantly blended family of one more son: Bobby (Judy) Grant (deceased) and two more daughters: Phyllis (Paul) Smith and Patricia (John- deceased) Howard.

The Griffin legacy of kindness and compassion exstends through six generations of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, family and friends.

Mabel poured a loving, stern, magnetic spirit with gentle wisdom into the lives of others, she spread this love and impacted children and adults both far and near; investing into their lives, leaving a lasting impression which can be passed to future generations.

The family learned to share mom and mother with deep admiration and respect.

She will be deeply missed.

Within these groups: there are special granddaughters: Desirae (Benny) Turner, Kela Griffin, and great granddaughter: Amirae Griffin.

There are three special nieces Florence (Chester-deceased) Truss (Poochie), Jackie (John) Hill and Veronica (Harvey) Wheeler who preceded her in death.

A special nephew Hosie (Charlene) Hall as well as a grandson: Keith (Joy) Griffin.

Mabel was member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church of Battle Creek, Michigan where she attended as long as her health would allow.

Due to safety concerns related to COVID 19 a private service for family and caretakers has been held. The service can be viewed at https://vimeo.com/492265829

A memorial service for all will transpire at a later date.
