Thank you for inviting me to the virtual funeral mass. Gene was a good friend to me while we were in Mayport and aboard the Roosevelt. I know God will use his special talents in heaven

Best ship' captain I with whom I ever served. I was Gene's navigator on USS Savannah in '77-'78. It was a pivotal time in my life, and I was truly blessed to have him as a mentor. He was a team builder, lead from the front, had a great sense of humor and his expectation of excellence lead his crew to never want to let him down. For those who spend a career in the military, you take in all the aspects that make a skipper great, hoping one day you'll get to demonstrate those qualities, too. Gene was the embodiment of those traits and values that you wanted to pass on to inspire and motivate your command. It was truly an honor to have known him. Thanks for sharing him with us, Sally. OK 3 sums up Gene's life perfectly.
