Bondy and I met at the Culver Military Academy Summer Woodcraft Camp in 1950. We were in the same unit, the Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a year ahead of me and graduated in '51. We met again in the fall of '52, when we both entered Culver Winter School as plebes. He was a member of the Black Horse Troop, and I was in the Infantry. Consequently, our paths did not cross all that much. He was the kind of person that was known by everybody. A BMOC, so to speak. Despite his notoriety, he was respectful to all that encountered him. Starting in about 1986, we connected, normally annually, via phone when I called to get any news items he might have for the class newsletters or to invite him to class reunions. He was a likable man, a good man. I am glad for this opportunity to remember Bondy again. I still feel a connection to him, as I am now his alumni class president and feel a responsibility in some sense for all our classmates from the class of 1956.

I attended Culver Summers School (1950-51) and Culver Military Academy (1952-56) with Bob, a.k.a, Frenchy, a.k.a., Bondy. We were in the Drum and Bugle Corps of the Woodcraft Camp (Summer School). He was a drummer and I was a bugler. During two summers our paths crossed routinely. In the fall of 1952 we entered Winter School, Bob in the Troop (School of Horsemanship) and I in the Infantry (Company B). He was mounted and I was afoot. Our paths did not cross routinely but with some regularity. Our previous time as Woodcrafters at least bonded us as good friends. I always held Bondy in esteem for his competitiveness, athleticism, friendliness, and integrity.
Accordingly, I come to praise Bob. I also come as the current President of the Culver Military Academy Class of '56. In that capacity and with a sorrowful heart I extend to Robert's family the collective condolences of our classmates still living. He was truly one of the best there ever was. Listen closely and you will hear the muffled sound of the drum and the lone bugler playing taps in memory of 1st Lieutenant Robert H. Bon Durant, CMA '56.
