Mikel Martin Obituary

Mikel J. Martin 94, went home to be with the Lord 9/26/2013 after a 1 ½ year fight with prostate cancer. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific on the island of Saipan in the 148th General Hospital as a lab tech and barber. He also had a photography shop in Beaumont on Elgie Street and later worked at Mobil Oil as an Instrument Mechanic who spent most of his time in #5 Gas plant. He was an Ordained Deacon and a Licensed Minister in the Southern Baptist Faith. His passion was helping others. He assisted prisoners on their release find jobs and become productive citizens. He made visits to nursing homes and homes of many friends to cut their hair when they couldn't get out to go to their regular barber. He was a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church when it had a sawdust floor and after moving to Lumberton he joined Crestwood Baptist Church. The church has been his comfort throughout his life and his devotion to it can only be envied by many devout Christians. His entertainment in his younger years was bass fishing and in his later years he loved Gospel music and Billy Graham TV shows. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Fagg Martin of Lumberton and son, Gerald Martin and wife Mary Ellen Alford Martin of San Antonio, their two daughters Sheila Ryan and her husband Paul and Kimberly Crook and her husband Bill, The Grandchildren by Wayne and Glenda Partlow (deceased 2008) are Lauren Sturm and her husband Brandon, Robert Partlow and his wife Lindsay, and Justin Partlow and his wife Jessica. There are 18 Great Grandchildren who will greatly miss him. Their son Ralph Martin died in 1993. Everyone is invited to lunch fellowship at Crestwood Baptist Church, 1150 Hwy 69 in Kountze, TX, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Sunday September 29, 2013. Visitation will be at the Church Chapel from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Followed immediately by the Celebration of his life. Mike was a great follower of the "LORD" and had a great personality. I worked with Mike at 5Gas Plant and Alky2 at the Beaumont Mobil Oil Refinery. I also knew him from Highland Ave Baptist Church. He was someone you could go to just to talk or for leadership. My heart goes out to his family

Dear Mike gave my daddy, Leroy (Temp) Templeton haircuts after his health declined so that he could no longer get to a barber shop. He ministered to his neighbors in so many kind ways. His generosity and loving attitude were experienced by everyone who knew him. God bless Margie and all the family.

What a terrific guy - always enjoyed chatting with him. He lent one of his books on WWII and his involvement. He was proud of his war record and proud of his family. One grandson had been the drum major at A&M. He faced life with courage and determination and held a firm resolve of trusting God when his daughter passed away suddenly. He was and is true grace under fire. I saw he and his charming wife at SCAT recently and will miss them. They are giants in the land!!!

I was very saddened to see that Bro. Mikel Martin had passed away. He and Mrs. Marjorie were close to the hearts of my parents, Gene and Gloria LaRousse. Many times in church or anytime Dad introduced Bro. Mike to someone, he would proudly share how Bro. Mike came to his and Mom's little house on Ave. C in Beaumont many years ago and won Dad to the Lord. That one night changed Dad's and Mom's life forever and allowed Dad and Mom to also share their love for Christ with many others. Bro. Mike, along with Mrs. Marjorie, visited Dad and Mom in their last years when they could no longer get out. The Martins will always have a special place in my heart for the love and friendship they gave my parents. Ms. Marjorie, may you feel the peace that only God can give as you go through this time. I hope that it also helps knowing how much Bro. Mike meant to so many.
God Bless you, Gerald and your family.

Gerald and Mary Ellen, we are so sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Martin. I remember him from church at Highland Ave. and from the Bingman Dr. neighborhood. I called my mom to tell her since she knew Margie and Mike from church, too. She has memories that go back 76 years to when that church floor was newly installed (she was 12). You have our deepest sympathy.

Mrs. Marjorie and family, Mr. Mikel was one of the nicest person I've ever met in my life. My heart is saddened. However, knowing he is with the Lord is very comforting. You have my deepest sympathy. Larry Bassett,Sr.

I feel sad to hear of Mike's passing, we worked on Gas Plant 5 East, for many years at the Mobil Oil Refinery. He was one of the most kindest persons that I have known in the last 64 yrs of my life. A true Christian, he was.

My husand, Kenneth, and I, have lived next door to Mike for 38 yrs,, We can attest to the fact that this man Loved the Lord and was one of the finest men one could ever meet. He was always ready to lend a helping hand. and he and wife Margie, have certainly 'lived' their lives to the fullest, Always traveling to see different places,,,and always a 'call' for us to pick up their paper and 'mail',,, as they were 'hitting theh Road,,,once again !! :-) Mike loved being out in his yard , making sure it was immaculate, and tending his garden,, then giving all the 'veggies' away, to all of us 'neighbors' :-) Mike lived a wonderful life,,and "passed' in a manner only God could provide,,, very 'peacfully' with his loved ones,, including 'us',,around him. I would not be surprised if Mike has Jesus Planting tomatoes at this time, !! We shall MISS him terribly, but will remember 38 yrs of FOND memories,, RIP Mike, til we 'meet' again..
