Raul Isern Obituary

Dr. Raul D. Isern, 95, of Beaumont, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his wife of sixty-eight years and his family. He was born on April 11, 1918, in Manzanillo, Oriente, Cuba, to Rafaela Anisia Isern and Luis Isern. Dr. Isern attended medical school and graduated from the University of Havana. He completed his post graduate training in medicine and surgery at the University of Havana Faculty of Medical Sciences Hospital. After completing his post graduate training in Havana, he graduated in 1944. Dr. Isern was proud to be not just a medical doctor, he was a healer. He moved to Campechuela, Cuba, and was offered the Directorship of Public Health at the local clinic. He and his wife, Graciella, got married on December 8, 1946, and built a small hospital for his growing practice along with her dentistry clinic. After Castro's regime commandeered their assets, he immigrated with his family to the United States in 1967, after first moving to Spain. He then settled with his family in Beaumont in April of 1969. Over the next four decades, he rebuilt his career and practice doing what he loved…caring for and treating the sick. After moving to Beaumont, Dr. Isern practiced medicine at Hotel Dieu, St. Elizabeth, and Baptist Hospitals. Dr. Isern received his Texas Medical Board License on January 25, 1969. Also being licensed in Florida, he received his medical license from the Florida Board Medical Examiners on February 11, 1976. Dr. Isern was a member of several medical organizations such as a Life Fellow of American Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Jefferson County Medical Society, and Southern Medical Association. One of the most important things to Dr. Isern was making sure he instilled the gift of education in his children. Dr. Isern is survived by his wife, Graciella; son, Dr. Raul D. Isern, Jr. of Beaumont; two daughters, Yvette Estrada and Isel Caballero; five grandchildren, Mario Juan, Diorella McGuire, Raul Isern III, Gabriella Caballero, and Eduardo Caballero; and two great-grandchildren, Cosette and Beckham McGuire. A Rosary will be recited for Dr. Isern at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 27, 2014, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 6825 Gladys Avenue, Beaumont, with his interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont.
