Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin H. Franklin, 80, of Belleville, Ill., born Feb. 16, 1923, in Tuscola, Ill., died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Franklin was a retired school administrator for the Cahokia School District 187. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in education from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Ill., in 1950 and 1956. He received 30 semester hours of additional course work at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill., for the administrative endorsement, as required by the state of Illinois. He worked from 1982 to 1984 as vocational director and assistant principal at Cahokia High School. He served on the board of directors of the Illinois Industrial Education Association. He served one term as president of the Consortium of Vocational Educators and Employers (COVEE). He served as a team member on several three phase state evaluations. He served one term on the general advisory committee for vocational education at Belleville Area College. He was a recipient of the Region V Distinguished Achievement Award from the Illinois Industrial Education Association. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Franklin was preceded in death by his parents, Howard C. and Sara, nee Dayle, Franklin.
Surviving are his wife, Mary M., nee Jenkins, Franklin; a son, Michael (Deborah) Franklin of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter, Terri (Walter) Hankins of Cahokia, Ill.; six grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) Franklin, Jeff Franklin, Michael B. Franklin, Katie E. Franklin, James Hardy and Tabitha Hardy; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary Franklin, Sarah Franklin, Christopher Franklin and Dylan Hardy.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Matthew United Methodist Church.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Kurrus Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Belleville, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Belleville, Ill., with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Entombment will be in Valhalla Mausoleum, Belleville, Ill.
