The Loss Of My Cousin Philip
My eyes filled up with tears as I heard the news.
It never occurred to me, how much I could lose.
I find myself wishing that it wasn't real.
Ever time I think about it, pain is all I can feel.
Tears fall from my eyes, I can barely see.
But my heart tells me that he'll always be with me.
I'm glad he feels no pain now-he lives in a perfect land.
I can still feel the soft touch on my shoulder of his loving hand.
I lie in bed and cry at night.
And I don't feel any better in the morning light.
And I will love and miss him forever.
Until the day we are again together.
Together in that perfect place above.
Filled with caring, sharing, and love.
But until that day comes-I will wipe my tears away.
And Philip I will see you again someday.
I will love you forever and God Bless you.
Your cousin (Kimbo)

I am another college friend, a Golden Heart. "Exuberance is beauty." William Blake. That word for me, describes Phil. It's just the way he approached things, football games, the flag and boots he wore to the basketball games. Those years on the hill in Canton were a little brighter because of you, and it appears that you provided the same thing for the many lives you've touched. Bless you, and please accept my condolences.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Phil's family and friends. I felt this bewildered sense of loss as a a child when I lost my father. Some of the fondest and most cherished times of my youth/young adulthood include Phil Dawg and the Strugglers and that thought brings to mind that huge Cheshire Cat yet so warm smile that Phil had ready to give to so many. Today I celebrate Phil's life, listen to one of his CD's and remember the person he was to so many ... the coach, the advisor, the go to guy, the encourager of reaching for one's dreams and the friend and big brother to so many kids through the years. I have heard the stories and have met the people that were blessed to know him. I pray for all of you that will miss him. GOD Bless ...

To the Watson Family
We are so sorry for your loss. Though we know several of you, we did not know Phil personally...I saw his band play a few times & we probably saw him @ a few family functions. By the number of people that have signed this guest book, I'd say that you folks lost one heck of a guy! Hold tight to all of your special memories to help you through the tough days to come.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Watson family.
Anyone who came in contact with Phil loved him. He was an all around"Great" guy and Motivator. I had the honor of going to high school with him. Phil was always happy and so full of spunk you just never really knew what to expect from him but whatever it was it was honest and heartfelt. To have known Phil was to Love him(he probably sang that song a time or two).So going to miss him jumping around on stage in all those crazy outfits that he was never embarrassed to wear.
Just know that we never understand god's plan for us but it is his plan and keep the faith.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Peyton and the family. I remember the first time I met coach last year in 8th grade when I participated in his mini-football camp. He saw me as a great football player in the future. Here I am today thinking about our friendship with coach Watson and the family. I will never forget his great sense of humor, his love for others, and his passion for football. He was the most respectful coach I ever had since I was a Cardinal and my big step to becoming a Bulldog. Peyton and family, you guys will always be a part of coach Watson, me and my family, and the Sparta Bulldogs. Have faith and have hope. I am still in shock by coach's lost. Never give up.

I had coach watson just a PE teacher in 7th and 8th grade. If you want to see a standout teacher and coach who actually TOUCHED people's lives this is one. HE was one man who was not afraid to try anything and not afraid of the inner social clique of the wesclin administration. He took all challenges with stride and always kept his upbeat attitude flowing. I gave this man more respect than I have some of my other teachers combined. He WAS the wesclin football program. He had the best sense of humor and could always make high school boys laugh. I didn't even play sports and he respected me. It was a sad day to see him go.

A memory:
When my dad turned 70, we took him to hear Phil and the band. When Phil saw us walk in the room, he announced to everyone present that my dad was there. You should have seen Dad's eyes light up! He really made my dad's birthday something special.
After reading the entries in this guestbook, it seems that he was always making people feel special - his football players, his students, his friends, his family. He had a rare and wonderful gift.
Phil was a "brother from another mother" to my brother and, because of this, I always thought of Phil as family. My heart is heavy with grief.
To his wife and family, I am so sorry for your loss. He will remain in the hearts of so many. I hope you soon find peace.

To Phil’s family, friends and players,
By reading the tributes on this site, one realizes that Phil’s mission in life was to love, and be loved. It is obvious that Phil was put on earth to brighten lives, encourage those around him and pass on his enthusiasm to anyone who would listen. His passion for football and music was surpassed only by his love of family, teaching and coaching. Phil was our son’s football coach @ FCHS and those memories were made very special due in large part to his influence on the players and team. While serving as the defensive coach for FCHS Phil created the term BLUE RAGE to define his defense. That term quickly became a rally cry for all fans @ FCHS. That is one example of the motivational skills Coach Watson had. He gave 110% to his players and expected no less from them, and they were happy to oblige. Phil became a forever friend to his players, their parents and all students wherever he taught. As we mourn this gifted man’s passing, let’s do something special for Phil. Pass it on...smile at someone, hug someone, and offer words of encouragement, especially to students. Coach Watson was passionate about helping our young adults. We can’t fill his shoes, simply can’t be done, but using the BLUE RAGE spirit he invented, we can help his work continue. One more thing… If you are a player of Phil’s, hit hard, hit often and let them know you had a coach that taught you how to do that!

Phil –
As Doug’s older brother, you became as an older brother to me. You watched me pitch at FCHS when you could; your enthusiastic encouragement of the ‘second generation’ (you were, as in many things, first) FCHS football squad still sounds in my ears, pushing each of our undersized frames to play larger than life; my first college football game was watching you play at Culver.
I wrote a song with Eric, as he was just learning to play, and you put it on an album with the Strugglers. You left the mike open to Doug and me – and while Doug took you up on the offer once or twice, I was just thankful that you thought of me.
I’ll never forget your rendition of ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless,’ at my house in Belleville. I still have that on tape, or on DVD now, transferred from videotape, with both you and me, the sun rising in the east, 20 years ago now. Doug was at Purdue, and by then we had become good friends.
What a blast! - Slow pitch softball in the 80’s, flag football in ’96, the year I finally played before moving away. Singing karaoke as some sort of team initiation – Back in the USSR, until you slipped in the Belinda Carlisle, you dawg! Outside Burgard’s in probably 1981, wrestling over a Budweiser. I don’t think you ever forgave me for that!
Thanks again for playing at the FCHS Class of ’82 20th year reunion, and at my 40th surprise birthday party! That was one of the greatest days of my life! Thanks for all of the ad hoc jams at Dean’s, for calling me, ‘Carp,’ and for all the years and days I had the joy of knowing you – they were far too few.
- Carp

Philip was my very first boyfriend in Millstadt. I wore his id bracelet (that Doug had dented) for many years. Phillip bought me my first box of Valentine chocolates---it had yellow satin on the box as well as a flower on the top. I was the envy of every girl in the sixth grade that day. I remember receiving perfume for Christmas. Most especially, I remember receiving my very first kiss from him when we were in 7th grade. After Philip went to Freeburg HS and I went to Belleville West, we lost touch. I am happy to hear he followed his heart with music. We had a band in grade school. smiles----we sat around his kitchen table and talked about our future band! I was going to be the band's dancer. boy, can you tell that was the sixties and early seventies. Philip was so kind and sweet. I have been thinking of him nonstop. My prayers to his family. Please know that I will be with you in my heart and spirit. With sympathy. Sue Kohlenberger Stone

Thank you and I love you coach. RIP. I extend my deepest sympathy to all those who loved him.

I remember Phillip as the sweet little grade school boy who gave my little sister her first kiss, a beautiful valentine box of chocolates, and she wore his ID bracelet (it was the early 70s, around 5th grade). He seemed so sweet and shy. Tonight, I warmly remember sweet "Bo up" and saddened to have heard this news today. My sister called me during her work day to reach out for comfort.
