Richard Sykes
Richard L. Sykes, 86, of East St. Louis, Ill., born Jan. 19, 1920, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., of complications from pneumonia.
Mr. Sykes was a pharmacist and an icon in pharmacy business in East St. Louis, Ill., he was the owner of Sykes Prescription Laboratory, 1516 East Broadway, East St. Louis, Ill., for six decades.
This kind gentle and generous man leaves to mourn his life, his wife of 50 years, Helen Sykes; and numerous relatives and friends. He will be missed very much by all who loved him.
His niece, Louvenia Jenkins of Pacific Palisades, Calif., has set up a scholarship fund in his honor. "The Richard L. Sykes Scholarship" will be an annual scholarship fund which will honor one senior high school student and Eastside High School, East St. Louis, Ill., with a monetary scholarship to assist the student with college expenses. Anyone wishing to contribute throughout the year or annually on the anniversary of his death may submit their contribution as follows:
"The Richard L. Sykes Scholarship Fund"
Attn: Mr. Coolbaugh, Mgr.,
The First Illinois Bank
East St. Louis, Ill.
There is no better way that the community which Sykes loved with all his heart and to whom he was dedicated can keep his wonderful legacy alive than by enabling worthy young men and women of East St. Louis, Ill., to realize their dream.
I thank you for honoring my uncle, Richard L. Sykes in this way.

My condolences go out to the entire Sykes family & the Sykes' Pharmacy employees in the loss of Mr Sykes.

Remembering as a young person how this wonderful friend gave so much to many families in the E. St. Louis community in the way of employement, good customer service & encouragement in furthering our education. I no longer live in E.St.Louis but I remember how valuable this businessman was to our city. Yes, he is an icon that will be deeply missed. May God continue to bless you all.
