Robert Randolph
Dr. Robert L. Randolph, 77, of Harwich, Mass., born in East St. Louis, Ill., died Friday April 11, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, Mass., after a long illness.
Dr. Randolph was born and educated in East St. Louis, Ill. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1943. He received in bachelor's degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and he received his doctorate in economics from the University of Illinois. Dr. Randolph enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was one of the first black naval officers in World War II. He was honorably discharged as an Ensign in 1946.
As an educator, Dr. Randolph served as executive vice president of Chicago State University during the early 1970s. He then went on to serve as president of Westfield State College in Westfield, Mass., during the mid-to late 1970s. At the time, he was the first black president of the Massachusetts State College System. During the 1980s Dr. Randolph served as president of Alabama State University. In the early 1990s Dr. Randolph served as Interim president of State Community College in East St. Louis, Ill., and retired and moved to Harwich, Mass., where he had a vacation home for many years.
During the Johnson administration, Dr. Randolph served as deputy director of the Job Corps and served as assistant director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
For the last 10 years, Dr. Randolph worked at the Housing Assistance Corp. in Hyannis, Mass. He was a member of the Cape Cod Commission and served as vice chairman. He also served as chairman of the planning sub-Committee and served on the executive committee.
Dr. Randolph was a member of the American Economic Society, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and was an active member of the First Parish Unitarian Church of Brewster, Mass., where he was a soloist and member of the choir.
Dr. Randolph is survived by a daughter, Heather E. Randolph of Boston, Mass.; three sisters, Johnetta Haley of St. Louis, Mo., Mary Mills of Detroit, Mich., and Frances Weatherly of Anderson, Ind.; and seven nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation: There will be no visitation.
Funeral: Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, at First Parish Unitarian Church, Main Street., Brewster, Mass. Interment will be private.
