Tadeusz Mitan

Tadeusz "Ted" Mitan, 83, of Collinsville, Ill., born May 2, 1931, in Zakliczyn, Poland, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2014, at his residence.

Ted and his family came to the United States from Poland in 1949. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, Ill., and later graduated from Bailey Technical School in St. Louis, Mo. Ted was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 784 in Cahokia, Ill., The 40 & 8, VFW Post 6504 in Waterloo, Ill., and Knights of Columbus Cahokia Council. Mr. Mitan retired from the Cahokia School District #187 in 1993. He was a 38 year member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Centreville, Ill., and later a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville, Ill., for more than 20 years. He enjoyed playing the accordion, flower gardening, loved nature, cards, bingo, washers, horseshoes, and was a soccer enthusiast.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Rozalia, nee Jarczyk, Mitan; a son, Ted Mitan Jr.; and two brothers, Joseph and Michael Mitan.

Surviving are his beloved wife of almost 57 years, "Amazing" Grace Mitan, nee Kipping; two sons, John Mitan of Collinsville, Ill., and Joe Mitan of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two daughters, Julie (Dan Lemanski) Embrich of Collinsville, Ill., and Mary (Lewis) Effler of Hamel, Ill.; four grandchildren, whom he was so very proud of, Brandon Effler, Mandy Embrich, Tommy Embrich, and Andrew Effler; three brothers, Alex (Mary) Mitan of Valmeyer, Ill., Marion Mitan of Glen Carbon, Ill., and Kasimier Mitan of Columbia, Ill.; a sister, Wanda Mitan of Red Bud, Ill.; nieces, nephews, and other relatives, both here and in his beloved Poland.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, Ill., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Collinsville, Ill.

Funeral: Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Collinsville, Ill. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens Fairview Heights, Ill.
