Walter Slaby

Walter Raymond "Walt" Slaby, 72, of Maryville, Ill., and formerly of Troy and Granite City, Ill., born Feb. 3, 1940, in Granite City, Ill., passed away at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at his home.

He retired in 1993 from Illinois Department of Transportation after many years of dedicated service as an engineering technician. He had served with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed woodworking and enjoyed his days of camping and traveling and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene P., nee Nemeth, Slaby, whom he married on April 23, 1960, and who died August 28, 2009; his parents, Walter C. and Mary V., nee Foley, Slaby; and an infant daughter, Christina.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Terri Slaby of O'Fallon, Ill.; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Thomas Weis of Trenton, Ill.; his cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Jackson, Hannah and Matthew; his sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Everett Hubbard of St. Jacob, Ill.; and other extended family and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children and may be accepted at the funeral home. www.irwinchapel.com

Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Irwin Chapel, Glen Carbon, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Irwin Chapel, Glen Carbon, Ill., with Father Pat G. Jakel officiating. Burial will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville, Ill.
