Alan Amsberry Obituary

Alan Amsberry passed away on March 29, 2011 at home surrounded by family. Alan was born in 1930 to Guy and Inez Amsberry and was raised in the Pacific Northwest with his sister Velma. After serving in Korea as a Navy Corpsman, Alan met and married his wife Mary and together they raised five children. Alan owned and operated Amsberry's Variety in Blaine and prior to his retirement worked for US Immigration. In addition to having a great sense of humor and a love for laughter, Alan enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodcarving, construction, and a good stiff drink. His proudest accomplishment is his family. Memorials can be made to Whatcom Hospice Foundation.

Dear Mary and Family,
So sorry to hear about my long-time pal's passing. Wish I had stayed closer these last 50 years. I remember with great fondness our early years in school, the quartet, hunting, our trip to California for my wedding, and his stays with us in Anacortes. Also his fine carrot and peanut salads.

Ele, My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Although I never met your dad I know how much he meant to you. And it sounds like you're a bit of a chip off the ol' block (professionalism, integrity and character). I'm very sorry for your loss my friend.

I also worked for INS at the Pac Hwy port of entry many years ago, and although I never had the opportunity to work alongoside Alan, I heard nothing but good things about him. Good things about his professionalism, about his character and about his integrity. I remember crossing paths with him all over town as he drove his green Ford pick up truck to and from places. May God Bless him.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have such good memories of going into your store as a child and being able to buy a bag full of candy for only a nickel and receiving one of Alan's infectious smiles. He always had a kind word.
