Alyssa Fell Obituary

February 11, 1994 - August 5, 2009 On February 11, 1994, a tiny child was born. We named her Alyssa. But, Alyssa was too long a name for this pint-sized child, and she was quickly dubbed Aly. And Lovey. And Poo-Bear. Or just Poo. On the night of August 5, under the brilliant light of a full moon, in a grassy field on the side of the road, with two of her favorite friends by her side, our beloved daughter Aly went to Heaven. Aly filled our home with joy. She was an exceptionally beautiful spirit with a huge heart. She was extremely artistic, and when she needed down time, she could be found on her parents' bed, making a mess with her art supplies or beads, creating something magnificent, often as a gift for someone. Her drawings and jewelry making were exceptional, and she designed many brilliant necklaces and bracelets under her own label, AlyCat Designs, that she could sell at her mom's shop, The Little Green Formal Shop, to help pay her way to the Olympics. Aly loved academics and was an excellent student, maintaining a 4.0 for years. Teacher Roger Hasper honored Aly with five awards at her sixth grade graduation. As a freshman this past year, she twice earned Student of the Month from her beloved teachers at Windward High School. Aly's first love was her family, but swimming came a close second. She competed in gymnastics, winning many medals along the way before breaking an arm at age 10. While rehabbing her arm the summer of 2004, Aly became engrossed in watching the Olympics on tv. When swimming came on, Aly suddenly proclaimed, "Momma, that's what I want to do.... swimming!". Unconvinced, her mother took her to the newly formed Team Dolphins. Coach Jim Williams cringed as this nearly 11 y/o pint-sized girl did the doggie paddle, but he saw potential somewhere and invited Aly to join the team. Coach Jim set a solid foundation under Aly that was built upon when Aly joined the Bellingham Bay Swim Team in the fall of 2007. Aly immediately blossomed and this year, under Coach Todd's tutelage, Aly's swimming took off, earning her the nickname Fierce Felly. On Saturday, August 1, Aly and good friend Donovan Brogan, and other BBST teammate competed in their first 2.5k open water race at Lake Padden. Donovan took first and Aly took third, earning them both coveted bobblehead trophies. Fall 2008 brought Aly's first high school season, which she embraced with gusto. She set three team records for Ferndale High School, and took first in Districts in her 100-yard backstroke, earning her a trip to 3A State as a freshman. This season's goal was to stand on the podium in her events, and she would have accomplished that goal. At just 5'3", Aly never let her small size slow her down. In fact, it caused her to work harder. She accomplished much in her short life. Aly was devoted to and dearly loved by her family. She is survived by her beloved parents, Lynda and Jamie; her brothers, DJ and Shaun; her sister, Natalie and nephew Caleb; her grandparents, Lyle and Yvonne Cheldelin of Lynden and David & Vicki Fell of Canberra, Australia; her many aunts and uncles including Layne and Glenn Martin of LaCrosse, Patti & Kevin Harbine of Ferndale, Stacy & Matt Roorda of Lynden, Scott Cheldelin of Texas, and Chris & Claire Howe of Canberra, Australia. Aly is also survived by her many beloved cousins who were extremely important to her: Matt and Valerie Martin, Kyle (Ky-Ky) and Kimmie Harbine, Kasi (Shrek), Amber (Am) and Chad (Chadly) Cheldelin, Hannah, Zoe and Jazzy Roorda, and Josie, Julia & Angie Howe from Australia. The cousins often called themselves the "Cheldifellbines." In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Aly's beloved team, Bellingham Bay Swim Team, P.O. Box 5821, Bellingham, WA 98227. For all her teammates: Swim fast. Be fierce. The family wishes to thank Donovan Brogan and Patrick Gregory for making Aly happy during her last moments. We also thank the entire BBST team for their love and support. Aly loves you all very much. And thank you to Coach Todd Edison for helping Aly achieve her dreams. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 14th, 2009, at Cornwall Church on Northwest Avenue at 1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome. .........My family and I moved from Ferndale to Bellingham when I was in the fourth grade. It was a pretty tough transition for my siblings and I to leave all our friends and go to a new school. But on the day we moved in, Lynda, Shaun and Aly arrived at our front door with a batch of brownies and a welcome, and from then I knew we would be okay.
For about three years Aly and I would spend hours outside on the trampoline, her always teaching me new flips she learned in gymnastics. I always wanted to be as good as her. She never braged about it, though.
Aly was a great friend to have and spend time with. When her family and her moved from Larrabee road, it was a pretty hard adjustment.
Thank you Aly, for being my friend. My family and I will always pray. We love you.

Dear Lynda & Family. I am saddened to read about another young, beautiful life being taken too soon. I can feel for you all so much. It reminds me of the loss of my two young children many years ago. I was very angry at God for a long time, but I soon could feel his love and guidence to help me survive the trauma. My family and friends were my salvation and helped me to deal with that difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. I hope that you find joy in all of the wonderful times that you shared with Aly. From my family to yours, we hope you will find some peace.

Aly was a remarkable young woman in so many ways, but was always so humble about her talents and abilities. Her radiant smile and sweet personality brought out the best in everyone here at Windward. She didn't miss a thing in Spanish, and I had really looked forward to having her in class. "Perla", you will be deeply missed! Fell family, I pray that God comforts you and gives you some peace.

August 14, 2009

May you find comfort and peace knowing she is in God's loving arms and that you'll see her again in heaven. My thoughts & prayers are with you.

May God hold the Fell family close to His heart during their time of grief. It was my pleasure and joy to work with Aly during her 5th and 6th grade years at North Bellingham Elementary. Often on a Monday morning my question to Aly would be " So what did you create this weekend?" Many times she would show me a pair of earrings or something else she created. Aly was a beautiful young lady, full of life and always willling to help a friend or classmate. I feel honored to have shared a small part of Aly's life. It is my prayer that her family will find peace and comfort during the days, weeks and months to come. Aly you were loved by many and will be missed deeply.

It was a blessing to be in high school with Alyssa for freshman year. She wrote in my yearbook at the end of middle school that she couldn't wait til we were off in college, and it's so hard to realize that she won't be there then, that she's not here anymore. the memory of her humble brilliance is an inspiration and though I never did see her in the pool, many people and the time she devoted to swimming testified to her fierce determination in competition as well. This is an immeasurable loss and my deepest prayers are with her family and all the community as they struggle with the tragedy of her death. Thank you, Aly, for being a shining example of a good person on this earth.miss you always.

August 11, 2009

My deepest sympathy to Aly's family. One can only imagine the depth of your grief losing such a lovely and accomplished young lady. I'm a third cousin, and my only acquaintance is through her obituary, written with such heart and love. My thoughts and prayers are with you. The world is a better place having had her in it.

Dear Fell Family,

It was such an honor and pleasure to teach your daughter and sister in Spanish class this past year at Windward High School. I am deeply saddened by her passing. We miss her so very much, and she will be remembered daily, especially in class, when we use her favorite verb and activity - 'nadar'/ to swim, in Spanish.

In addition to her many special nicknames, the one she picked for us to call her in first year Spanish at Windward High School this past year was 'Perla' or Pearl. It seems so appropriate that she chose this name as it reflects her love of water, her joy and brightness that she shared with others, her solid athletic and academic accomplishments as well as her talent for making jewelry.

I remember most checking in with Perla about her practices or meets before or after class, along with her good friend Marciana/Lizzie and her plans. Perla's dedication to her sport and academics was very inspiring to me. She always put her all into everything she did, mastering quality and quantity with ease and a smile.

Sending many thoughts of care, support, strength and hope to you,

Layne Martin

Love you Aly. You will be forever missed. This is by far the most difficult thing our family has gone thru, each of us is holding your dear cousins closer and appreciating each and every one of them more than ever. Thank you for teaching us the value of dedication and self motivation. You set the bar high for the rest of us, hopefully we will learn and be able to follow in your footsteps.
Hope to see you in Heaven someday, we can go shopping for jewels and party dresses.

Dear Fell Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I knew her very well. she brought me up when I was really down, now that she is gone I feel really empty inside. She was a great friend to me and everyone she knew. she could bring you up when you were in your worst time, she could tell you it was going to be okay and it really happened. she was the type of girl that was going to make her dreams come true. She was going to become an Olympic champion. I just really wish that she was still here she was the one girl who would really make a difference in this world. She always said that she wanted to go to Australia and live there. I just hope that I could see my good friend one last time, but now that will never happen. Again I am so sorry to what happened to your daughter Linda you must feel awful, but you are in my prayers.

I only knew her as long as I was on the team, which was by far not long enough. As a new swimmer, she was a big inspiration to me. I thank her so much for that. August 7, 2009

Each morning at school, I would ask Alyssa about her swim training and she would smile. She swam in the early mornings, long before most of us are awake. Counting the laps, she would humbly say a mile or two; there would be more training in the evening. Alyssa balanced so much in life, earning straight-As while turning in work of outstanding quality and creativity. I have never known a student with so much talent and drive.

Aly was a shining star. She is a model of how to live life to the fullest and I am so very happy to have known her. I'll miss her dearly.
