David Johnson Obituary

David Lee Johnson, MD
October 12, 2022
Bellingham, Washington - Notice Text:
On October 12th, 2022, Dave died peacefully following a massive bleed in his brain.
He was born in Portland, Oregon on May 21st, 1945, to Roger and Grace Johnson. He graduated from Chelan High School and Pacific Lutheran University. He graduated from the University of Washington Medical School in 1972 followed by a two-year residency at Pittsburgh Children's hospital and one at Seattle Children's Hospital. He joined Northwest Pediatrics in 1975 (later becoming PeaceHealth).
Dave loved being a pediatrician and practiced for 36 years. He was a kind, compassionate, skilled, non-judgmental practitioner. Dave was well known for the winks he gave after a snarky or humorous statement. Dave cherished his office staff and colleagues.
In 1978 Dave married JoAnn Richmond. Their family life with daughters Megan and Annalisa revolved around camping, hiking, backpacking, gardening, sports, and music. Dave loved being home and building trails on his "little slice of heaven." On walks with family and friends, Dave would often talk about the forest and the circle of life in nature. Mountains and rivers fed his spirit.
Fishing and conservation were Dave's great passions. All who knew Dave, knew his penchant for angling, whether it was salmon, trout, or bonefish. His journeys took him from remote coastal mountain streams to desert river canyons. From the rainforest watershed on the Olympic peninsula to the Bight around Crooked Island in the Bahamas.
He fished and explored numerous rivers in the Pacific Northwest with long-time friends. Dave was an active member of North Sound Trout Unlimited and deeply concerned about the future of cold-water fisheries.

Dave was a fighter. After each medical setback he quietly, and without fanfare, worked hard to get back on his trails and return to fishing and the natural world he loved.
Our family is so grateful for decades of skilled help and kindness from his team at the Washington Center for Bleeding Disorders. They pulled him through many tough bleeds. Please consider donating to this amazing organization.
Dave is survived by his wife JoAnn, his daughter Megan and daughter-in-law, Emily, his daughter Annalisa and son-in-law Ryan, his children of the heart Ken and Lessli Putney, and his dear grandchildren Chloe and Tully. And Geordie, his cat, whom he adored. His surviving siblings are Keith Johnson, Luanna Olney, and Chris Johnson.
There will be a celebration of his life at Dave and JoAnn's home on March 18th, 2023, from 1:00pm-4:00pm.
Dave was a good man and we will hold him in our hearts always.

When I crossed paths with Dave, be it meals that we shared, talking garden tools, or trips to and from his home to join JoAnn for work, swimming, cycling, or just to be together, his huge, warm smile and hug greeted me, and made me smile also. He was a warrior through his health challenges, and a model for not letting them keep him from living life, and pursuing his passions. I have enjoyed walking his trails, and want to be part of maintaining them in his memory into the future. His spirit will be there, working with me. I miss you Dave.
JoAnn, I am here for and with you now, and for many years to come. I am sad for the loss of your one true soulmate. I love you dearly.

Dave was my best friend. In the 49 years I knew him he always made me feel that our friendship was an important part of his life. He was always kind even when he disagreed often saying "People see the truth in different ways". He was a stubborn man when he felt that his opinion on a subject was correct and he would often continue to discuss a point till he won you over. The debate was always kind and thoughtful and he rarely showed negative emotion about my opinion. The most important thing about Dave was that he made most everyone he knew feel like he was your best friend. I miss him every day but he will always be with me in my heart.

JoAnn and family...so very sorry for your loss. He took care of our boys from 1976 until their late teens. Such a compassionate and caring doctor. Just a great man.

While I didn't know Dave directly I feel that I knew him through my friendship with his wife Joann. In reading the many remembrances , I am struck by the fact that he lived a rich life as a light in the world . I believe his loving spirit will live on forever. Rest in peace Dave and may your family find comfort in the love you shared in this realm.

Such kind words for a great man. I knew Dave for only a few years but during that time i so enjoyed his company. Walking his trails with him hearing his stories of fishing, travel and everything else under the sun. He was truly a joy to be around. He will be surely missed by all. We will meet again on the other side Dave

I had the privilege of knowing Dave for the last several years. As we shared conversations, his intelligence, kindness and humility became evident. I learned from others that Dave had been a wonderful pediatrician who cared for Bellingham kids for decades. And that over the years he had created and maintained miles of walking trails. My fishing friends told me about Dave's skill in tying flies and catching (and releasing) steelhead.

Dave battled complex medical conditions for much of his life, but I never once heard him complain. He was a warrior, a life-long learner, and a kind of Renaissance man. Our world is a better place because of him and he will be greatly missed.
