Jean Hong Obituary

JEAN ETHEL HONG Jean Hong, 86, said "Goodbye" to her tired body after suffering a severe stroke and went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on 11/19/2014. She was born in Seattle on November 14, 1928 to Michael and Anna Paton. They moved to Juanita where she attended grade school and Lake Washington High School. At about the age of nine she put her trust in Jesus and lived for Him ever after. After attending Western Washington College she taught elementary grades in Burlington, Ferndale and Bellingham for 25 years, besides being at home with her 3 infants for 2 or 3 years each. Her second career was as an SIM missionary lecturing at Maranatha Bible College in Ghana for 11 years. She retired and taught Bible classes at Evergreen Community Church and did much other volunteering such as giving rides to people for their appointments. She will be fondly remembered for her generous spirit, her infectious laughter and a never-failing positive attitude. She loved children and taught in many local Vacation Bible Schools. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Michael, granddaughter Erika Jean Hong and grandson Benjamin Robert Van Vleck. She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Bob Hong of Bellingham, daughter Ruthie Van Vleck of Ferndale, son David Hong of Carmel, CA and son Daniel Hahn of Ventura, CA, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at Greenacres at 2:00 p. m. Monday November 24 and a memorial service at Evergreen Community Church (6899 Enterprise Road) at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday December 13. The family is grateful for the loving care she received from Lynden Family Medicine, St. Joseph Hospital and Alderwood Convalescent Center. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to Evergreen Community Church or to The Gideons, P.O. Box 882, Lynden, WA 98264. I had the privilege of working with Bob and Jean at the Kendall Chapel for a number of years. Oh, memories of Jean with her smile leading these rural children in song with her poster-sized song books!

Jean was such a sweet lady. Her presence here on earth will be missed but we know we'll see her again. Thanks for sharing her with us.

I still remember her smile. She, along with her husband, were so committed to the children. I count it a honor to have known her. The world is a better place because
she and Mr Hong let Jesus pour out of themselves. Thank you for giving to the Lord, I was a child that was changed.
