John Dunki-Jacobs Obituary

John R. "Dunki" Dunki-Jacobs, 86, peacefully entered the Kingdom of the Lord on Saturday February 21, 2009 at 9:17am at his home in Lynden, WA USA, surrounded by his family, relatives and close friends, after post operative complications from aortic valve replacement surgery. Mr. Dunki-Jacobs was born in the former Dutch-East Indies (now Indonesia) on April 19, 1922. As a teenager, he achieved Gilwell Wood Badge Eagle Scout recognition. John was drafted into the Dutch Navy in 1941 and survived 3 harsh years in Japanese POW camps where he risked his life to secretly continue his higher education under the guidance of fellow POW's. He completed his studies at the Higher Technical College of Amsterdam in 1948. In 1950 he married Louise Linck and started their family. He was sponsored for US immigration in 1953 and joined the General Electric Co. in Lynn, MA. In 1956 he transferred to Schenectady, NY where he began a distinguished career as a world-class power-system engineer specializing in the design of industrial electrical systems. In 1984, he founded Industrial Power Systems, Inc. and served as President until 1995. In 1982, Mr. Dunki-Jacobs was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for advancing the design standards of industrial power systems. He garnered 3 other major IEEE awards: the "Kaufmann Award" in 1991, the prestigious "Medal for Engineering Excellence" in 1996, and the "Millennium Medal" in 2000. In 2008, he completed his longtime goal of publishing a comprehensive handbook for industrial power systems grounding design. In the Schenectady area, he was a Deacon of the Second Reformed Church, then a founding member of the Christ Community Church in Clifton Park, NY. Upon moving to Beaverton, OR in 1985 he became a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Oak Hills, OR. Attracted to Lynden, WA for its beauty and shared Dutch heritage, he moved there in 1990, where he attended the Grace Baptist Church of Lynden. Mr. Dunki-Jacobs is survived by his wife Louise and three married children: Robert and Kerry Dunki-Jacobs of Mason, OH; E. Winifred and Timothy Straightiff of Newark, DE; Raymond and Marjorie Dunki-Jacobs of Williston, VT. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Erik Dunki-Jacobs of Cincinnati, OH; Adam Dunki-Jacobs of Cincinnati, OH; Amy Dunki-Jacobs of Williston, VT; Abigail Dunki-Jacobs of Williston, VT and Rachael Straightiff of Newark, DE. There will be a Memorial Celebration at Grace Baptist Church of Lynden at 1pm on Saturday February 28, 2009. A second Memorial Celebration and internment will be held in Schenectady on April 25, 2009. Memorial contributions in John's name can be made to either Grace Baptist Church Missionary Fund, 338 N. Park St, Lynden, WA 98264 or to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 800 E Chestnut, Suite 1-C, Bellingham, WA 98225. Arrangements under the care of

Louise, What a great man John is, was and will always be in our hearts. We are so very sad that John has gone on, yet we know that he will always be in our hearts and forever be the Angel beside you, protecting you. Our love and prayers are with you and your children.

Louise, I pray you will feel God's loving and comforting arms around you. I've known you for many years but more recently got to know John at CHCC...what a kind man!

I first met Dunk in 1964 while a young engineer at Cincinnati Procter & Gamble. A gentleman and an oracle in the engineering community. Few attained his stature in the Power System Engineering field. He was always willing to teach and made Power Systems Engineering enjoyable and I always looked forward to those annual trips to Schenectady and his guidance.
