Gerald Mattison Obituary

Gerald G. "Jerry" Mattison Sr.

1926 - 2014 SHAFTSBURY Gerald G. "Jerry" Mattison Sr., 88, a resident of Sycamore Lane, Shaftsbury, died peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2014, in Bennington at Center for Living and Rehabilitation. Born in Bennington on Feb. 12, 1926, he was the son of Lloyd G. and Marion E. Potter Mattison. Jerry was raised on the Maple Hill Road family farm. He received his early education in the one room Maple Hill School in Shaftsbury and later graduated from the former Bennington High School. Jerry was a master cabinet maker, working most of his career for Miles Lumber Company in Arlington, Vt. He enjoyed his work and the creativity it offered. In younger years, he liked bowling, playing softball, hunting, fishing, and going to his camp in Sunderland with his uncles and close friends. Later in life, he learned to play golf and enjoyed the challenge it offered along with the friendships he developed. He was an avid reader and loyal Red Sox fan. As a past member of the Shaftsbury Volunteer Fire Department and the Bennington Club, Jerry contributed countless hours to his community. As a seventh generation member of the Shaftsbury community, he embodied the independent spirit that has made Shaftsbury a great place to live. Jerry is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Beatrice Jane Herrick, whom he married in Shaftsbury on June 1, 1946; his two sons, Gerald G. Mattison Jr. (Debbie), and Neil R. Mattison (Dana); grandsons, Gerald L. Mattison (Lisa), and Owen N. Mattison; great-granddaughter, Jordan T. Mattison; sisters, Janet Hollister and Bessie Budro (Leo); sister-in-law, Ardella Morin; brother-in-law, Arthur Paulin (Betty), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
