Matthew H. Waite
1959 - 2010 PAWLET, VT Matthew H. Waite, 50, beloved husband of Kellie Baker-Waite and devoted father of Emily and Lilly, died unexpectedly in the Green Mountain National Forest May 6, 2010. He was born July 18, 1959, and has lived in Pawlet his entire life. Matt and Kellie celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary Feb. 12, 2010. Matt leaves his mother, Donna Lewis, of Hartford, N.Y.; his father, Myron Waite, and longtime companion, Betty Daly, of Pawlet, and step-father, Theodore Parisi of Castleton.
Matt is also survived by his wife and best friend, Kellie, and daughters Emily and Lilly, of Pawlet; three sisters, Lisa Taggart and her husband, George, of Montpelier, Va., Jill Christiana and her husband, Thon, of Florence, and Theresa Maneen and her husband, Alex, of Albany, N.Y. Matt also leaves his in-laws, Mary and Tim Baker of Dorset, Vt., and Port Orange, Fla., Vickie and Peter Haskins of Dorset, Vt., and Dale and Sherrie Baker of Dorset; two step-sisters, Laurie Parisi and her husband, Jeff Corntassel, and a step-brother, David Parisi of Tulsa, Okla. Matt was the inspiring uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Matt's early education was in the Pawlet schools and he was a graduate of Granville High School (NY) in 1977. He then worked for several years for Mithoffer Construction before starting his own highly successful excavation and concrete business, Matt Waite Excavation and Kelco Concrete. His optimism and great love of life was infectious to those around him. His hobbies were always of the most exciting nature, driving stock cars in competition as a younger man, cruising on his motorcycle and obtaining his private pilot's license, among many. However interested Matt was in his business and recreational pursuits, he never allowed those things to supersede his devotion to his family and particularly the endeavors of his two daughters, whose activities he supported and attended with uncompromised commitment.
Matt's avid support of his community was known to all. He made notable contributions to the Pawlet Public Library, Mettawee Community School, Burr and Burton Academy, Pawlet Historical Society, Riley Rink and many more. The loss of Matt will surely be tangible to the many people whose lives he touched in a positive way. His family and friends will always cherish the gifts received through knowing him.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Dorset/East Rupert. The Rev. Dr. James Gray will officiate. Kellie, Emily and Lilly
We moved to Manchester, Vt several years ago and our daughter attends Burr and Burton Academy. We were at her first soccer game and knew nobody in the stands. I overheard a fellow talking about flying which peaked my interest and I joined into the conversation. He said the next day he would be bulldozing over a house for a reality show rebuild. I remarked to my partner after the game that I had the good fortune to meet someone that I could tell was a genuinely sincere and nice person. We often joked that we should call him to bulldoze over our house so we could rebuild it properly. That person, of course, was Matt. Our sincere condolances to the family. You are in our thoughts.

I am sorry to learn of Matt's passing. I talked to Perry Waite today and he told me. I first met Matt about 10 years ago at one of the race tracks. I've had many great conversations with him and found him to be a really great person. Perry reminded me of the time a couple of years ago when he filled in as our jack man at Loudon. He was as good as any jack man I've ever seen. I remember how proud he was that day. My prayers and thoughts are with you and the girls.

About Matt~~Alas taken taken swiftly and violently like the roaring wind that severed the instrument of his death from the connection to its own life source, this magnificent man leaves behind a trail of love, honor, respect, compassion and an endearing presence . Though his countenance may fade from view with the passage of time, his mark on mankind/womankind will endure.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news. While I will miss working with him, fortunately his professionalism, talent, and willingess to do and defend the right thing was not lost on his employees. I would like to send my condolences to all of his family and friends as well as to the folks at Matt Waite Excavation and Kelco (who seemed to be one in the same to him).

Kelly, Emily, Lily and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Matt. Mom and I attended the services but there were so many people conveying their condolences around you that we couldn't get to you but I want to know you are in our prayers. The girls did a terrific job writing their feelings, and Emily did a great job reading hers. His life really was one to celebrate. If there is any thing I can do,please let me know. People say it gets easier with time, but I don't think you ever miss them any less. Hold tight to the memories and the knowledge that one day you will be together again. God Bless...

Kellie,
I was at my office, going to Berkshire Bank when everyone was arriving for the service. I had not heard, and would've come over, except that I was wearing jeans and a workshirt. Though Matt wouldn't mind (if he were here), I wasn't dressed to respect you or the fine man I fleetingly knew as a fellow Maple Street parent. A man of integrity and quiet wisdom...not to mention the infectious smile and the so likeable personality.
Shocked as I am, I hold his memory dear and wish you and the girls the best in finding a way to make sense of this senseless tragedy.
Love,
Brad "Marshall" Hammond

Matt dug a lot of holes in his life. Dug some pretty big ones. None could compare to the hole he´s left in all of our collective lives. Deeper and wider than we could ever imagine. And the only things that can begin to fill that hole in are the memories of his kindness, humor, and love and the legacy he leaves behind. He lived an abbreviated life, but a full one, nevertheless. Our hearts go out to Kellie, Emily, Lily and all of the family.
