Albert Scherr Obituary
Albert E. Scherr III, 85, died on March 28, 2007, at his home in Williamstown.
Born on Nov. 26, 1921 in Mount Vernon, N.Y., he was the son of Albert Edward Scherr Jr., vice president of the Dime Savings Bank of New York, and Marguerite Christine Schwiers. He graduated from the Loomis School in 1939 and from Yale University in 1942.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
Working as a chemical engineer for Dow Chemical, he met his wife in New York City. They were married in 1949 in Stonington, Conn. They moved to Williamstown in 1950, where he worked for Sprague Electric Co. of North Adams.
Mr. Scherr held patents for the mass production of electronic components. From the 1950s onward, he took part as an executive in the expansion of Sprague Electric to the American South and internationally. He traveled widely on business to Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with extended stays in Hong Kong, India and Italy. he managed Sprague/CREAS in Milan, Italy, and lived in that city with his wife and youngest son from 1969 to 1971.
He served as vice president and as assistant to the president of Sprague and retired in 1986.
He and his wife lived in Boston from 1985 to 1995, when they returned to Williamstown. They then divided their time between Williamstown and the North Woods Club in Minerva, N.Y.
Mr. Scherr served as the chairman of the Williamstown Finance Committee and on the board of the Boys Club of Williamstown. Both he and his wife volunteered for the Berkshire chapter of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. He volunteered at the Milne Public Library in Williamstown, of which his wife had been a trustee and where he maintained a science bulletin board for many years.
He served as treasurer and a member of the board of the North Woods Club, as well as president and member of the board of the Ten Bends Association in Morristown, Vt.
An avid fly fisherman, he regularly fished streams in Massachusetts, Vermont and New York.
He remained a lover of science, literature and the arts. For over 20 years, he and his wife subscribed to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. They also remained members of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. In Boston, he volunteered at the Museum of Science and Industry and, with his wife, was a member of the Boston Atheneum.
He shared a longtime love of Italy with his family. For many years, he participated in a group which met regularly to converse in Italian. He visited that country regularly.
His wife, the former Elizabeth Babcock, is deceased.
He leaves a daughter, Elizabeth S. Poris and her husband, James, of Upper Montclair, N.J.; three sons, Albert E. Scherr IV of Portsmouth, N.H., Alexander W. Scheer of Athens, Ga., and Edward P. Scherr of Danville, Calif., and their spouses Susan Chamberlin, Candace Hawkes and Shelly Pozzi; six grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth Schierberl Scherr, Charles Samuel Poris, William Edward Poris, Elizabeth Palmer Poris, McKenzie Palmer Scherr and Isabella Katherine Scherr Chamberlin.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Albert E. Scherr III will be held Saturday, May 19, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Park Street, Williamstown, followed by a reception at the Williams Inn.
