Alfred Ferris Obituary

Al Ferris was born in Massachusetts, the youngest child of Lebanese immigrants who had eloped to the U.S. as teenagers. The family ran a restaurant and bar in Lanesborough for many years. Following the death of Al's father in 1945, they moved to San Diego, California.

Al attended Herbert Hoover High School and received undergraduate and law degrees from Stanford University, where he met Jeannie, his wife of 53 years. They were first introduced at a football game and married five months after Al proposed.

In 1964, Al was admitted to the California Bar and served as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. He formed a private practice in 1968 and specialized in corporate law, business litigation, labor, biotechnology, telecommunications, and estate planning. He served as an arbitrator and mediator in hundreds of disputes and was a member of the National Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. He was a former Vice Chair of the International Society of Primerus Law Firms. Al was a mentor to both aspiring and long-practicing attorneys alike.

He loved San Diego and supported the greater community in a variety of ways; he was a regular patron of the Old Globe Theater and Coronado Lamb's Players Theater; he served on many local boards and committees throughout his lifetime; he was involved in volunteer work with area charter schools, the San Diego Public Library, and several biotech firms. Al was also a dedicated Padres fan, holding season tickets for decades. However, he gave up on the Chargers when they moved back to Los Angeles and broke his heart.

Al knew San Diego like the back of his hand, every side street, shortcut, and secret parking spot. He could tell you the best places to get tacos, seafood, and cold beer. He loved history, politics, traveling the world, going on road trips, and eating breakfast at Jimmy Carter's on 5th Ave.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, four siblings, and beloved wife. He is survived by two daughters, a son-in-law, one grandchild, two grand dogs, three grand cats, and many great friends whom he cherished deeply.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

Gilly and Carrie,
Your dad and I were lifelong friends, beginning at San Diego's Hoover High School. During our SDHHS years in the 1950s, we SCUBA dived together from La Jolla sharing one set of equipment! While at Stanford, he drove me to campus from a Palo Alto over-the-garage apt and return. I celebrated for Al and Jeannie when they married!! As you know, Al and I phone-talked regularly while he was stricken with Parkinson's. I cherished the man!
You called me, Gillie, and my gratitude for you and your Dad is always with me.
With my love,
Harry

Dear Gillian and Carrie,
I remember, your dad, as a very young man, recovering from back surgery, in pain, walking back and forth on San Juan Road as he recovered. He was always focused and determined while your mom, Jeanne authored beautiful books. Your parents had a beautiful marriage and I loved having the Ferris family as great neighbors. I miss both of your strong brilliant parents, but I am sure they will stay in your hearts forever.
Love and condolences to you, their beautiful daughters,
Nancy Nobel (Croisant)

It was with great sadness that we learned of Al's passing. He was a compassionate man, loyal, and very intelligent. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and we enjoyed his company whenever we were with him.
He is now in the company of his loving wife, Jean.
Our condolences to his daughters, Gilly and Kerry.
With Love,
Barry and Mary Francke

Al and I were friends for fifty years and law partners for thirty of those. He was smart, congenial, ethical, all of those and more. I cannot imagine what my own career would have been had it not been joined with his. He knew when to lead and when to follow and was good at both. Although both long retired and off on separate non-legal paths, the thought that I can no longer call him up to get his take on whatever I was thinking of nor ever again pick up the phone and hear him say, "Have you got a minute?" will take a lot of getting used to.
I wish Carrie and Jill comfort and pride in knowing that your father's life was so well-lived.

I first met Al as a fellow Trust for the Library Foundation SD. I also worked with him on the Foundation's Finance Committee. Al was a devoted supporter of the Foundation and his commitment to San Diego's library system was evident and much appreciated. He will be deeply missed.

Al was such a wonderful guy and always so considerate, with a wonderful personality. He was an outstanding lawyer and formed a fine firm that endures today. We lost contact some time ago, but whenever we did talk, it was always such a pleasure. He will be missed. May God bless his family in this time of sorrow. Judge Vic Bianchini.
