Beatrice Crittendon Obituary

Beatrice W. Crittendon 1913 - 2009 OTIS Beatrice W. Crittendon died peacefully at Laurel Lake Center in Lee, Mass., on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 95 years young. Born Beatrice Viola Wescott, Nov. 15, 1913, in Northfield, Vt., to Adeline Knowles Wescott and Edwin Wescott, she attended schools in Northfield and graduated from Baypath Secretarial College in Springfield, Mass. While working in the purser's office at Norwich University, back in Northfield, she met her future husband, William Sumner Crittendon, of Otis, Mass., a cadet at the University. They were married in her family home in Northfield on Oct. 30, 1937. As wife of a Colonel during World War II, Bea created "home" for her husband and children at numerous army bases. Bea was a member of Eastern Star, First Congregational Church of Otis and many PTO Associations. Mom/Nani loved flower gardening, bird watching, craft painting, singing, baking her delicious apple pies, dancing with Dad and making quick-witted jokes that would often catch folks off-guard! Mostly, she loved her family and friends. Beatrice leaves her four children: Marlyn C. Coffey of Otis; William S. Crittendon, Jr. and wife, Sheri, of Crested Butte, Colo.; Deborah C. Dutton and husband, Ted, of Otis, Mass., and Laurie C. Nikituk and husband, Michael, of Otis. Eight grandchildren; Kim Tonlino and husband, John; Kris Coffey and husband, Bill Rust; Steve Crittendon; Beth Glotfelty and husband, Jake; Bill Cade and wife, Doris; Ben Cade and wife, Lindsey; Alex Nikituk and Angela Nikituk, eight great-grandchildren: Jake Tonlino and fiancée, Kimmy Wilander; Luke Tonlino; Ryan Lolar Cade; Ashley Crittendon; Colten Crittendon; Nicholas Glotfelty; Julia Glotfelty and Madeline Glotfelty. Many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and their families also survive her. Bea was predeceased by her husband, William S. Crittendon, Sr. April 1, 1993; her granddaughter, Margaret "Meg" Cade, Oct. 29, 2000; and her granddaughter, Karen Coffey, Jan. 31, 2001. Brother, Darwin Wescott, and sister, Almeda Baraw, also predeceased her. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Service of Remembrance will be held at the First Congregational Church of Otis on June 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at the Otis Center Cemetery and luncheon to follow in the community room at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the "Meg Cade Memorial Scholarship Fund" for Lee High School Seniors. Donations should be mailed in care of FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230. Marilyn and Bill: My parents, Gene & Rebecca Cleveland, knew your mom and probably were in high school at the same time. When we lived at 76 South Main in Northfield in the late 40's, the house was referred to as the Westcott Place. Then we met your family again at Colby in the early 60's. (I'm class of 64.) I also knew Suzanne Baraw at IBM. Small world, isn't it? I hope happy memories (especially those of my favorite activity, dancing) bring solace to you and your family.

Bea grew up very close to where I live on Spring Street. I do remember her and that house will always be known at the Wescot House. You must have treasured memories as she was a lovely person and enjoyed a good laugh and fun. My sympathy goes to all of you.
