Dean G. Maynard

1957 - 2023

Dean G. Maynard passed away on January 21, 2023 after a battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 9, 1957 to the late George F. Maynard and Katherine (Biever) Maynard. He spent his younger years with his brothers growing up at Jiminy Peak Ski Area where his father was the first general manager. He enjoyed ski racing, running, hiking, dirt bikes, photography and summers on Cape Cod.

Dean attended Northeastern University receiving a BA in Biology then changed to Landscape Design due to the fascination of plant anatomy. He attended Conway School of Landscape design and received his MA. He went to work at Oak Hill Nursery doing Landscaping and garden center sales. He worked at Mohoneys of Boston. He designed and set up the Boston Flower show wining many awards. He was tutored by Ed Mezitt of Weston Nursery on forcing trees and shrubs for the shows.

He returning to the Berkshires due to his first wife Heather Nesbit's family health conditions, and worked at Wards Nursery as their Landscape Designer. He worked briefly for Foresight Land Services as a junior engineer and for John Tullock as an associate Landscape Architect.

In 1989 Dean and wife Heather started Maynard Landscape and in 2000 Dean and 2nd wife Lynn started the Gifted Gardener and Nursery.

Dean has had thousands of clients-some big like GE Plastics, Walmart and Auto Zones. But most of his satisfaction came from the many residential designs and installations-He really enjoyed the different properties and clients weekly. He was vice president and president of the Herbert Arboretum, where he installed the fountain, lilac walk, conifer garden, benches and many trees.

Dean enjoyed his travels to England seeing many castles and gardens. He traveled to Germany-Switzerland-Austria where he enjoyed the skiing with co-racers, ski school instructor and friend from days of teaching under Court McDermott at Bousquet Ski Area.

He is survived by his son Erich, of Boston, his care-giver and close friend Susan Bedard of Pittsfield, and his Shiba-Inu Mia. His brothers Dale Maynard and wife Susan of Sun City, North Carolina and Steven Maynard and his wife Kristen of Seattle, Washington. He also leaves his nephew Douglas, nieces Debra, Britney and husband Eric, Brook and her Husband Tomas and great niece Bella, his ex-wife Lynn D. Maynard and her daughter Victoria Tesoniero.

There will be a celebration of his life in the in the spring/early summer. Dery Funeral Home has been entrusted with his arrangements.
