BECKET -- Herbert A. Weiler, 82, of 50 Washington St. died Thursday at home.
Born in Queens, N.Y., on Sept. 27, 1922, son of August E. and Mary Victoria Fluhr Weiler, he was a 1940 graduate of the Richmond Hill High School. He also attended the Pratt Institute of Science and Technology for machine design in 1941, prior to entering the service in January 1943.
During World War II, he was a draftsman who worked in the operations section of a tank destroyer unit, drawing maps, charts and signs. He was involved in the following campaigns: Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1945 and had earned several medals.
Throughout the years Mr. Weiler was employed in a variety of businesses, including being co-owner and manager of A & W Auto Parts in Long Island, N.Y., regional sales manager for New England (for the Chrysler Corporation), president and manager for Mopar Distribution Center in Schenectady, N.Y., and owner and operator of the Gaslight Motor Lodge in Lee. He was also a real estate broker, developer, and owner of a Lindal Cedar Homes Franchise. Following World War II he was employed at Sperry Gyroscope Company Inc.
He was very involved in the community and was an active member of the Tri-Town Rotary in Lee. He served the Town of Becket as a member of the finance committee and the planning board in Becket. He enjoyed singing in the choir at both St. Patrick's and St. Mathew's churches in Becket.
He and his wife, the former Elaine Bancroft, would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary Sept. 28.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Kathleen Dubay of Huntington and Lisa Vallejo of Denver, Colo.; two sons, Donald Weiler of Russell and David Weiler of Becket; his twin brother, Robert Weiler of Atlanta, Ga., and nine grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Herbert A. Weiler will be held Tuesday at 11 at St. Patrick's Church in Hinsdale. Burial will follow in North Becket Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. Among survivors are a cousin, Henrietta Ryan of Lee, a daughter-in-law, whom he loved dearly, Nina Weiler, and two sons-in-law, Henry Dubay, and Glenn Vallejo. Memorial donations may be made to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund care of the American Red Cross, in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. His death marked the passing of a beloved husband, father and friend. He was also devoted to his community and church.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
