Jerry Smith Obituary

Jerry Smith, 85, passed away peacefully at his home, July 18, 2024.

Jerry and Jo, his wife of 47-years, opened a SCUBA store in Pittsfield, MA, now known as AST Scuba. Over the next 32 years he and Jo worked side by side, educating others, sharing their love for the beauty and mystery of the underwater world.

He's credited for training emergency responders and establishing the Berkshire County Dive & Rescue Team, which began as a volunteer rescue team for all under water related emergencies. It has since grown and been restructured, with an end goal of a Regional Dive Team.

To celebrate Jerry's remarkable life, there will be a Celebration of Life held for family, friends and extended scuba family on Saturday October 26, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Jerry taught Scuba at Simon's Rock in 1983, and through those classes touched so many young lives. Through him, and indomitable Jo, I and so many friends (and my father) learned the love of diving. Vivid memories of his pool tests (with blacked out goggles) forcing us to address all sorts problems underwater with quiet deliberation --- as he said, 'deal with the problem, think it through."
RIP Jerry, you taught so many people wonderful lessons.
