I just wanted to send a shoutout to Joe and his family for the wonderful work Joe did in the Lewis Hine project. My high school class is studying his work currently. GREAT WORK.

My Name is Donna Motta. My family and I had the incredible privilege of knowing and briefly writing with Mr. Manning. I have read his beautiful writings, and they helped me create North Adams as my home! I love seeing the city as he taught us to look at it. We also had the opportunity to go on one of his famous city walks, for which we are grateful, and will never forget. We were able to talk with Mr. Manning several times over coffee at the UNO Center, here in North Adams, where Mr. Manning agreed to speak at our Writer's group about the importance of memoir and "writing it all down." I've learned much from this incredibly kind and gracious man. I'm grateful to have known him. We lived in Fall River, MA, where we first met the "Mill Children" exhibit. Little did we know, years later we'd have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Manning himself! Thank you for your works of love and care for people Sir! You have made such impact on so many, and I am grateful my family is included in that number.

Joe was a good soul and very interesting and thoughtful man. I knew him some through his poetry, and a kind word when I would see him around town. He will be greatly missed.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Joe Manning. He possessed a rare ability to humanize history. His work connecting families and communities to the children depicted in Lewis Hine’s photographs is unequaled. No written account of this work can capture the deep and moving impact he made when he brought the people in these photographs back into the lives of their families. His work to create a genuine sense of people and place is lasting and unforgettable.
