John Hickey Obituary

John Patrick Hickey, Jr., 91, of Lanesborough MA, passed away on Saturday October 26, 2024. He was born in Brookline, MA on September 10, 1933. He was the son of the late John Patrick and Margaret Hickey.

He was a graduate of Northeastern University with a bachelor's in engineering and served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant in Germany. In 1960 he married Mary (May) E. Cavanagh with whom he shared a joyful partnership for 51 years.

John was predeceased by his daughter Maura Taillefer in 2007, his wife May in 2011, and his sister Patricia Wengert in 2022. Surviving are his children Patrick (Angela) Sean (Amy) and Kate (Joe), grandchildren, Sean Patrick (Kim), Erin, Jay, John, Dylan and Gillian, great-grandchildren Calvin and Lucy, and six nieces and nephews.

John enjoyed a long career as first a civil engineer and later a safety engineer in the insurance industry after achieving a master's degree in engineering from NYU.

John and his family spent 25 years in Wilton, CT where John was an active member of a determined group of citizens who went to court and secured an injunction to stop the construction of Super 7 through Wilton.

John was passionate about community service and served the Lanesborough community as a member of the Lanesborough School Board, the chair of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, the President of LAPA (Lake And Pond Association) West, the Friends of Pontoosuc Lake and the Springside Garden Club.

An avid golfer, John was a member of the Connecticut, Silvermine and Berkshire Hills Golf Clubs.

Funeral Notice:

Calling hours for John Patrick Hickey, Jr., will be Friday, November 1, 2024, from 1pm to 3pm at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201. A private burial for family will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Friends of Pontoosuc or the Lanesborough Councils on Aging, in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home.

I knew John from the Springfield Greenhouse. As facilities manager he was always willing to share his knowledge. Very kind man.
