Mary Abernathy Obituary
Mary Janice Abernathy, 77, of Sheffield, died Sept. 3, 2013. Visitation will be on Friday from noon until 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Sheffield. Her funeral service will follow at the church. Burial will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens. Reverend Bill Bedsole is officiating.
Mrs. Abernathy is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Abernathy; and her parents, Edward and Florence Langley.
She is survived by her daughters, Gene Ann Blankinship (Karl) and Mary Jane Dillenberger (Kelley); grandchildren, Sarah Ann Ricketts (Jason), 2nd Lt. K. Taylor Dillenberger II, USMC "the favorite", Mary Beth Blankinship, Langley Dillenberger and Madison Dillenberger;
great-grandchildren, Anna Coleman, Lilli Pace, Jane Ellis, and Sanyaa Achsah Ricketts.
Mrs. Abernathy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield for 72 years. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Janice was an active member of the Emmaus Community.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Hudson, Danny Reese, Charlie Grimmitt Sr., Charlie Grimmitt, Ged and Justin Grimmitt.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the ER and Pallitive Care of Helen Keller Hospital and Alacare Home Health and Hospice for the love and care given to their dear mother.

Janice was the glue that kept the SHS Class of 1953 together. We owe her a lot for all she did to maintain that bond. My sympathy to her family. What a loss!

I am saddened by the loss of a great friend I first met at TVA. After her TVA retirement and then subsequent retirement (again!) from Jim Bishop Chevrolet, I saw her very infrequently. However, she was one of those friends who never became a stranger. Every time we spoke, it was just like we saw each other the day before. Gene Ann and Mary Jane, please accept my sincere condolences. Our loss is Heaven's gain. Now she can see her Gene again.

Dear Gene Ann and Mary Jane,
May God bless all of you at this time. Janice's passing brings a flood of memories to me. Really GOOD memories. I can't recall when the Abernathy family and the Wade family weren't sort of joined at the hip. You were all part of my life growing up and wouldn't have had it any other way. I never knew a more outgoing vivacious woman than Janice...she was a joy to be around. We will miss her dearly.

Oh my, what a lose for us but what a wonderful gain for Heaven. One of my favorite "Buddies" even before the first grade. Janice, even taught me how to ride her girls bicycle. She was always so sharing and caring.In your grief, just remember the wonderful memories of your Mother and Grandmother.
