Patrick Scully Obituary

Patrick J. Scully, 54, of Malden, Massachusetts passed away on September 27, 2018. He was born on January 17, 1964, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the son of Jerome J. and Joanne M. (Maunsell) Scully. He graduated from Lee High School in 1982 and received his bachelor's degree from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 1986.

Patrick worked for more than 23 years in communications, public relations, media, and political consulting. His work included serving as Director of Communications and Media for the State Senate Democrats in the Connecticut General Assembly, and as a public relations specialist for Sullivan & LeShane in Hartford, Connecticut. He most recently worked as a political consultant, working on campaigns for numerous political candidates. He also wrote the very popular and witty blogs, The Hanging Shad and The Everett Stimulus, covering issues of political and human interest.

Patrick was a gifted athlete in his youth, excelling in soccer, baseball and especially hockey. He was an avid Boston sports fan and particularly loved going to the Garden to watch the Bruins play and to his beloved Fenway Park to catch a Red Sox game. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and vacationing on Martha's Vineyard and listening to the music of his favorite band, Entrain. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could captivate a room by telling a good story.

He is survived by his parents, Jerome and Joanne of Lee; his brother J. Michael Scully and his wife Jennifer of Wilbraham; his sister Mary (Scully) Grimaldi and her husband James of Northborough; and his loving nephews and nieces, Timothy and Nora Scully, and Grace, James, and Gregory Grimaldi. He is also survived by his loving friend and companion Kelly Libby, and Kelly's niece, Penny; and numerous cousins, other family, and friends.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, 140 Main Street, Lee, Massachusetts on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 10 a.m. Prior to the Mass, his family will greet friends from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main Street, Lee. Burial will follow at the St. Mary's Cemetery, Spring Street, Lee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Patrick's name to St. Mary's School, Lee, Massachusetts, care of the Kelly Funeral Home.

We will all certainly miss our good friend, gone too soon. Pat was truly one of the nicest guys I've known. Whether pressing for Democratic candidates and ideals or cheering on the Orange, the Sox or the Bruins, Pat always managed to be a dynamic and effective spokesman without being shrill or making things personal. Fighting the good fight 'til the end. His passing creates a huge hole in the political dialogue. A gigantic loss for all of us, but my heart goes out to Kelly and his family. I'm so sorry I was unable to join you today.

To Pat's family: How I enjoyed a friendship with Pat that grew from opposite sides of the political aisle in Hartford, took root through good-natured sparring on politics and baseball, and was cemented through respect for his craftsmanship and passionate loyalty. I will miss this man greatly, mourn his loss, and will continue our conversations in my prayers. God bless Pat Scully and all who he loved.
