Paul Ferdyn Obituary

Paul Joseph Ferdyn passed away on December 16, 2023 after a long health struggle. He was fifty-six years old.

A lifelong resident of Pittsfield and graduate of Taconic High School, Paul worked in the restaurant and hotel business with long stints running the banquet departments at the Berkshire Hilton Inn and Cranwell Country Club. Then for many years he was easy to find as the main bartender at La Cocina. He later worked at the Pontusuc Lake Country Club where he did everything from greens keeping to bar tendering to running tournaments.

For most of his life Paul was a serious golfer and one of his favorite parts of his job was squeezing in a quick nine holes alone after the course was closed for the day.

He was a good fisherman from a young age and it wasn't uncommon for him to be late for family dinners because he lost track of time while standing on the lakeshore. His loving, but frustrated, parents learned to accept Paul's forgetfulness when in pursuit of fish.

He loved live music and going to concerts. He rarely missed a show of his favorite bands including Rush, Tony Bennett, Neil Young, and especially The Grateful Dead. It was a sad time for him this past year when his health kept him from attending some shows.

Paul's biggest passion was his garden. He absolutely loved working with plants, mostly different flowers and ornamental shrubs. Although he did keep a few tomatoes and pumpkins, it was the flowers that he most cherished. He found solace in the long hours he spent puttering around surrounded by his blooming yard. As his health deteriorated it was what kept him active.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Frances and Anthony, as well as his brother Michael. He is survived by two brothers, Mark and Tony, and by his nephew, Marcus.

As per Paul's wishes there will be no services at this time. A celebration to commemorate his life will be held at a future date.

I am so saddened to hear of Paul's passing. I knew paul since we were nine years old. He was one of the first friends to welcome me when I came to Highland school, a connection that remained as I'd see him through the last nearly 50 years. A very sweet guy, with a great sense of humor and just a sincere friend.
He will be missed.
My heart goes out to his family.

Dear Mark, Tony and extended Family,
I am absolutely heartbroken to hear the news of Paul's passing as I have watched you all grow up over the years and always had the greatest respect for Mom and Dad, as each of you own their likeness in many ways and that is such a great gift in itself. I just have so many fond memories of all of you as a Family, that I have taken with me over the years, always reflecting on the many fun experiences and how much love you all have shared for each other. I know now that Paul is in a better place, not realizing he was battling illness for some time and please know I will be praying and thinking of all of you during this difficult period dealing with the pain of loss. So many great memories will always return better days in time with the realization that this Gift of Family never really leaves our hearts.
With sincere condolences, respect and Love for all of you,

As you go through life, there are only a few people who you consider life long friends. Paul was definitely on of those friends. Even though we didn´t see each other often; however, when we did. It was like we just saw each other last week.
As I was reading this obituary in shock. I noticed that Dante Sangiovanni added a comment. It´s ironic, because when we were growing up, I would always mix up their phone numbers. 3-4556 or 3-4565. I still can´t remember whose was who´s...Rest in peace my life long friend.
You will be missed by many.
