Richard Discoe Obituary

Mr. Richard E. Discoe, 96, of Pittsfield, MA, passed away at his home on Friday, September 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on March 20, 1928, son of the late Edward and Isabel MacKinnon Discoe he attended Pittsfield Schools. He received his GED while in the Navy.

Richard enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945, where he proudly served his country for 20 years, 17 of which were sea duty. While in the military, he worked on 5 different Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts. During this time, he escorted the Queen of England through the St. Lawrence Seaway, and also rode on a camel to see the pyramids and sphinx while cruising the Suez Canal and Red Sea.

Following his retirement from the Navy. Richard was employed at General Electric, where he worked as a winder. Richard also dedicated another 21 years of service before retiring in 1989.

Richard was a member of the Fleet Reserve, the Navy Memorial, American Legion, and Tin Can Sailors. He was also an active communicant of St. Charles Church.

Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, the former Carmella S. Monterosso. Carmella passed away on January 27, 2015. He was also predeceased by his sister Barbara Ann Chapman.

He is survived by his two daughters, April Ann Discoe-Keough and her husband Bruce and Pamela Jean Discoe Garwood, all of Pittsfield, as well as two grandchildren, Kalie Monterosso Garwood and Richard Discoe Garwood.

Funeral Notice:

Funeral services for Mr. Richard E. Discoe will be Thursday, October 3, 2024, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12noon at St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor of St. Agnes Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:30am at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home.
