Richard O'Brien Obituary

Richard James O'Brien, 82, of Lenox Dale MA, peacefully passed away on December 24th, 2025. Richard was born on September 4th, 1943, son of John and Elizabeth O'Brien. In his final days, he reflected positively on the life he and his wife built and the family legacy they created. He expressed a hope that those around him would honor him by celebrating those blessings.

Richard, known lovingly as "OB", was predeceased by his wife Gloria Pease O'Brien, who passed on November 15th, 2025. After 62 years of marriage, OB followed the love of his life only weeks later, reunited again after a lifetime spent side by side.

He is survived by his four children, Carrie Healy (John), Denise Castegnaro, Jennifer Turner (Brian) and Richard O'Brien Jr. (Tanya); seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn Kohlenberger (Lee), Jessica Healy, Shane Castegnaro, Cameron and Neely Turner, Collin and Matthew O'Brien; four great-grandchildren Jacqueline, Charlotte and Connor Kohlenberger, Gabriella Castegnaro; two siblings, Dennis O'Brien, Marge O'Brien Coty (Michael) and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents and his in-laws, Edwin and Esther Pease, Beatrice and Ray Cowell.

OB "Dick" was employed for more than 40 years at J.H. Maxymillian Inc. as a Project Superintendent, a career in which he took immense pride. Along with his brother Dennis, he cherished the early days being at Jim Maxymillian's side for the start-up of the company. Whether constructing a bridge, a parking lot or a road, Dick took great joy in sharing all the details of the job and the stories that came with it. A ride through the Berkshire's and beyond was sure to include a tour of all the projects he brought to life.

OB was a proud member of the Lenox Dale Fire Company since 1965. Holding many rankings, including Captain. He is remembered as being the first to arrive at the station to drive and operate the engine. Being from "the Dale" was a part of who OB was, a place he put down roots and made lifelong friendships. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, camping and rides on his Harley. OB found joy in family vacations, by the ocean or in the woods, the more the merrier. He treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always preferring a full house. During his winters in Florida, he could be found on his boat enjoying the Tampa Bay or cruising in his golf cart around the neighborhood. OB was a proud fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, and enjoyed watching a game with a cold Coors Light in hand.

Looking back on his life, OB found pride in the enduring legacy he leaves behind - one grounded in hard work, commitment and unconditional love. His presence continues to be felt through generations who honor his example and carry his spirit forward.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 10th at 10 AM at St. Vincent de Paul's Church, 29 Crystal Street in Lenox Dale, MA. I took care of Dicks mom Elizabeth for years at Edgecombe. I would admit watching the 2 of them share stories always brightened my shift. They were 2 peas in a pod. Elizabeth adored him and so did we ! Enjoy your eternal visit with your mom Dick. You will be missed.
