Bernard "Bernie" Brenner
July 5, 1944 - November 22, 2023
Bernard L. "Bernie" Brenner, age 79 of Stanwood, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at his home. He was born July 5, 1944 in Mt. Pleasant the son of Leon F. and Emma M. (Tice) Brenner. As a young man Bernie worked at the Mt. Pleasant Giant store where he was a cashier and a stocker. He enlisted in the United States Navy and following his honorable discharge, Bernie worked at the Big Rapids Giant Store. He was later employed at Simon Industries in Big Rapids until his retirement.
Bernie enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, and taking care of his yard. He loved his family, his grandchildren, and the joy of holding a precious baby.
Bernie was a member of the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church for over 20 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 42 years, Penny of Stanwood; children, Bernard "Nardy" (Nicole) Brenner of Sammamish, WA, Robert Brenner of Suttons Bay, Philip (Nate) Brenner of Boston, Shallen Beatty of Grand Rapids, Courtney (Donald) DePew of Reed City; five grandchildren, Emily, Paige, Lauren Grace, Greyson, and Ty; several nieces and nephews.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Edward Brenner, Nelly Gooch, Anita Pool and Clarence Brenner.
Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, at the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church. Bernie will be laid to rest at the Stanwood Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, November 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions in Bernie's name may be made to the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church or Corewell Hospice.
