Jeffrey Hayes Obituary

Jeffrey T. Hayes
July 13, 2021
Jeffrey T. Hayes, 52, of Big Rapids, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the Big Rapids Hospital. He was born July 15, 1968, the son of Philip Hayes and Paula Skalla.
Jeff graduated from Jenison High School, in Grand Rapids, in 1986. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army and honorably served 3 years, stationed in Germany. Upon returning to the States, he received a B.A. in History from Eastern Michigan University. In 1997, he married Sherry Cocklin of Big Rapids.
Jeff was a devoted husband to Sherry and a loving father to his two sons, Nick and Noah. He was an avid football fan, who could be found cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles each Sunday. His passion for football extended to the Big Rapids community, where he served as a mentor and Rocket football coach for over 10 years.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Sherry Hayes; his sons Nick (Catie) Maus and Noah Hayes; his father, Philip Hayes; stepmother, Donna Hayes; his brothers Steve Hayes and Chris Riley; and his sisters Erin (Joel) Karim, Robin (Ron) Brock, and Debra (David) Bronson; father and mother-in-law, Bruce and Karen Cocklin, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored. Jeff had many friends who loved and supported him over the years; they held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Paula Cochran; his grandparents, Judy and Otto Hayes, Leona and Paul Skalla; and his sister Judy Kwantes.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Coach Hayes was one of my youth football coaches. He was someone who took the time out to really get to know me and lit a fire inside of me to put my passion into the sport. It wasn't always about sports with coach, he would make sure to check in on my teammates and I to make sure our grades were good. He continued to check on me and I grew into a man, talked to me, gave me lessons and told me he was proud of me. I loved that man. I, like many others are a better man for knowing him. Rest up coach! Much love!!!
