Al Scheid, of Billings, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2003, at St. John's Lutheran Home.
Al, the son of George and Mary Scheid, was born March 18, 1912, in Minnesota Lake, Minn. He attended school in Lemmon, S.D. Al moved to Billings in the 1930s and began working at the Belknap Cafe. He then began working at The Old Northern Hotel and met the love of his life, Florence Ferguson. They were united in marriage on July 25, 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1944 and received a Good Conduct Medal.
Al and Florence owned and operated the East and West Parkway cafes. He had a great gift in making pastries and serving a terrific chicken fried steak. After selling the East Parkway, he retired. He spent a significant amount of his retirement years at Deadman's Basin. He was so very proud of his cabin that he worked so hard to establish trees and grass in an area that not much grew. He could tell a great story, was always willing to lend a helping hand and was always ready to take anyone for a boat ride. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 94 for 48 years.
Survivors include son John Scheid; daughter Mary and son-in-law Chris Hutchinson; sister Julia DeVroom; grandchildren Corbin, Courtney and Connor; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence; son, Robert; and eight siblings.
Cremation has taken place at Smith's Crematory and a memorial service will be held at American Lutheran Church, 5 Lewis Ave., on Friday, March 28, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Elks Club or charity of one's choice.
