Doug passed away March 15, 2010, after a long illness. He was born in Sheridan, Wyo., April 5, 1930, the youngest son of Ed and Mary Holbert. He attended grade school in Lodge Grass, and the old Garfield and Lincoln schools in Billings. The family moved to Fishtail, where he graduated from Absarokee High School in 1948.
Doug served in the United States Air Force as a B 29 gunner, flying 30 combat missions over Korea. He was awarded the air medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
He and Marilyn R. Pelton were married at her family home on April 14, 1953, while he was still in the service and she was in nurses training.
After his discharge, Doug was employed by Wilcoxson's Ice Cream Co. as a driver-salesman. He made many friends on his route from Nye to Miles City. He retired in 1995 after 42 years with Wilcoxson's.
Doug was an avid hunter, bowler and horseshoe pitcher. He looked forward to the fall hunting season so he could go out with his boys and grandkids. He loved the outdoors.
He was past president of the Billings Horseshoe Club and past president of the Western Montana Horseshoe Association. He entered four world tournaments. He loved the fellowship and competition of the game. He was inducted into the Western Montana Association Hall of Fame in 1985 and was the outstanding club member that same year. He received the Mr. Horseshoe award in 2007. He was also team captain of the Wilcoxson's bowling team for 52 years.
Doug is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of 56 years; son Keith (Kathy) of Columbus; their children, Melissa (Joel), Douglas and Charles; son Todd (Lecia) of Billings and their children Tedeen and Kyli; also great-grandchildren Max and Tyra; one sister, May Bell of Whitehall; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ed and Lloyd.
Services will be held Friday, March 19, at 1 p.m., at Absarokee Community Congregational Church. Burial will be at Rosebud Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Absarokee Congregational Church or Rocky Mountain Hospice.
