Evan D. "Duke" McRae

Evan McRae Obituary

Evan Douglas McRae was born to Evan and Alice Edwards McRae on May 29, 1927, in Forsyth. He died July 24, 2006, due to complications associated with cancer.
His youth was spent on the family ranch on Rosebud Creek. Because of his desire to participate in the war effort and having fulfilled the necessary requirements for graduation, his high school education at Forsyth was completed following his junior year. Due to a hearing loss, he was not accepted into the military. In lieu of military service, he joined the merchant marines. After returning to Montana, he attended Miles Community College. He was then drafted and allowed to serve despite his hearing problems. He chose to join the Rangers. A majority of his time in the service was spent in Germany, where, for a period of time, he lived with a German family with whom he stayed in contact for many years.
After he returned to the family ranch, he met a young schoolteacher named Patricia Rumann. They were married on Dec. 22, 1954, in Colstrip. To this union, four children were born: Doug, Sheila, Scott and Bruce.
He continued to ranch until 1981, when he moved to Sheridan, Wyo., and owned and operated the Hidden Valley Ranch, where he pursued his passion, raising and racing Quarter Horses. While in Sheridan, he met Catherine Stewart. They were married Dec. 15, 1987. They later divorced and he moved to Billings, where he resided until his death.
He is survived by his sister, Audrey Thompson of Sheridan, Wyo.; daughter Sheila (Jack) and their children Michael, Sara and Danny; son Doug (Kim) and their children Catherine, Christina, and Heather; son Scott (Audrey) and their children Brett and Joel; and his great-grandchildren Bailey and Jazper. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Kimball; brother Malcolm (Mac) McRae; and a son, Bruce Gordon McRae.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m., at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. A luncheon will follow the service.

Please accept our sympathy, Duke was very well known to our family, I enjoyed living on his ranch at Hidden Valley while my dad was training his racehorse. He was a very special man who meant a lot to our family. He will be deeply missed.

Duke and his brother were neighbors to our family ranch on the Greenleaf and strangely enough when Duke moved to Sheridan he bought Les's dad's old place for his race horses. He will be missed by all.

Doug, Sheila, Scott and Families: I will always have good memories of Duke, especially when all of us kids were young. He always had a kind word and of course a little bit of teasing for each of us. My deepest condolences for you.

To the McRae Families,

We were so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved father and grandfather. Duke was a very kind man and he raised caring and loving children. Our memories of Duke will be of him at the race track, at the 4-H fair in Forsyth, and the sporting events his granddaughters participated in. We saw the pride he had in his children and heard it in his voice whenever their names were mentioned. We pray that the Lord keep you all close in his heart at your time of need.

God Bless and Keep you safe,

Morla Cole/Rice
